To ask if it is socially acceptable to eat garlic?

Just that really. I’m trying to eat a little more healthily but lots of my “healthier” foods and recipes contain garlic.

I’m worried I’m going to constantly go around smelling of garlic and pissing people off. Is it socially acceptable to smell a bit of garlic?

Haha. I put garlic in almost everything and have never been told I smell of it! I do wash my hands well after cutting it and clean my teeth. I have never noticed the smell on anyone else.

Somone at my work eats loads of raw garlic every morning to stave off colds. It is very smelly!!

DippyAvocado · 29/08/2019 09:31

I add garlic to just about everything too. I really don't think it will be noticeable unless you're eating loads of it or crunching it raw. I have recently started using garlic puree for a lot of recipes as it adds flavour but avoids the garlic-smelling hands! I find it fine for sauces/curries etc.

I love garlic. Eat it most nights. The only one who suffers is DH because it makes me trump all night!

orangeshoebox · 29/08/2019 09:37

cooked garlic in moderation is fine.

a camembert cooked with a whole 'bulb' probably not...

raw garlic stinks. even if taken in capsules and not touching the mouth directly looking at former housemate

RozHuntleysStump · 29/08/2019 09:39

I love the garlic you can get at greek food market stands. It's little cloves in oil. Sooo nice but when I buy it I have to consider my planned activities for the next few days as it does stink.

GinNotGym19 · 29/08/2019 09:40

Garlic is the food of god and is never wrong’

IAmNotAWitch · 29/08/2019 09:40

We eat a shitload of garlic, love the stuff. I am convinced that is why we never get colds etc, also never been attacked by vampire.

I don't know if we smell, I also don't care. Grin

I think most people don't really worry about this. It's very hard to avoid garlic and I would suspect anyone who cooks from scratch every night or ever cooks Mediterranean or Asian style dishes is probably eating garlic at least once or twice a week.

Garlic is also in loads of ready-made products so I wouldn't worry really.

LoveGrowsWhere · 29/08/2019 09:46

I wouldn't take a garlicky packed lunch but eating it the evening when you're going to brush your teeth night & morning seems fine.

SallyWD · 29/08/2019 09:48

What a British concern!! It's fine. My in laws use a whole bulb of garlic in almost every meal. I've never smelt garlic on them.

DoomsdayCult · 29/08/2019 10:11

You have to eat ALOT of garlic for it to affect the scent of your sweat.
I did that strategically as garlic in sweat is an insect repellant when I was on a dig in a location with these tiny biting midges. Sprays would sweat off and the midges seemed to react like spray repellant was HP sauce. So we adopted the local practice of eating tons of garlic. I would eat a minimum of a bulb a day (12-25 cloves). You probably are not eating enough to have it be in your sweat.

HavelockVetinari · 29/08/2019 10:17

I wouldn't eat it at work if I was going to be having meetings with people, and it's definitely not appropriate if you work closely with people (professions like optician, dentist...etc.). I think it's fine in the evening though, and fine if you know you won't be getting close to people throughout the day.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 29/08/2019 10:20

I eat lots of garlic whenever I have mouth ulcers and it always gets rid of them. It's fabulous stuff and as long as you brush your teeth/don't lick people you should be fine.

EleanorReally · 29/08/2019 10:23

i read the Queen does not eat garlic, due to her role in meeting dignitaries and the like
i dont care, nor do i meet dignatiries and eat it at every meal

SamStephens · 29/08/2019 10:24

Garlic is a staple in 90% of the meals I cook lol it’s fine!

kitk · 29/08/2019 10:30

I'm not sure I'd care if it was socially unacceptable- you won't get between me and my garlic!

pooopypants · 29/08/2019 10:40

I find cooked garlic is far less pungent than are, so unless you're eating it are, you should be grand!

My PIL are Asian and eat a lot of garlic, never noticed that they stink 😊

Aprillygirl · 29/08/2019 10:42

As long as you don't go round trying to stick your tongue down people's throats it should be fine OP.

KittenMittens1 · 29/08/2019 11:02

I love garlic, I take it to work too! eat it in the canteen not at the desk to make sure I am not annoying anyone, then mouth spray and have a mint after.

no on is annoyed, and I smell minty fresh for the rest of the day!
