To ask why my hair would be falling out in clumps?

I'm young and I'm healthy. I feel okay in myself and I'm not particularly stressed, but my hair is falling out in clumps Sad

Literally a couple handfuls of hair coming out each day. My hair used to be so thick but the hair loss is really starting to show now.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what came of it? Haven't been able to get a GP appointment yet but I'm starting to worry now.

Have you had a baby recently?

pooopypants · 23/08/2019 00:00

Stress? Medication? Alopecia maybe? Certain vitamins levels being low? I think thyroid issue may cause hair loss?
I lost a lot after DC were born.

GP would be the best person to be able to answer though, it could be dozens of things

mumaw · 23/08/2019 00:00

@Moonshake 4 months ago. It crossed my mind that it could be that, but this is really extreme!

Maybe a blood test for iron deficiency? I was very low last year and I had noticeable hair loss with it.

pumkinspicetime · 23/08/2019 00:01

Babies can cause a lot of hair loss, with the amount that fell off when I showered I thought I might go bald. ( I didn't)

Moonshake · 23/08/2019 00:02

I had the same at exactly 4 months post partum. Google post partum hair loss - it can be quite dramatic. It's the reason why lots of new mum's get their hair cut shorter. You should defo check with GP if you think you could be anaemic as that probably doesn't help.

Justme10 · 23/08/2019 00:03

Mine came out in clumps after having DS, I think it's something to do with your hormones. It will eventually calm down and start growing back in.

mumaw · 23/08/2019 00:07

Thanks everyone , I hope so! I've got bald patches it's gotten so bad Sad

Don’t worry OP. I had this at the same time after having a baby. It’s normal. And it will grow back!

My sister had the same thing and had bald patches. Her hair is fine now.

My hair fell out in clumps for a year after each baby was born

mumaw · 23/08/2019 00:11

I have exactly the same thing, have had my blood tested and all levels are fine (iron a little low but in the range of normal) and have been given a diagnosis of major stressful event in life causing it to fall out in clumps, ie having had twins 14 months ago at the time.

4 months on and I’m still losing hair, and have baldy patches when I put my hair up now, but I’ve gradully started losing less. I have high hopes that it’ll grow back eventually!

SeaToSki · 23/08/2019 00:12

Go and get a thyroid test, your levels might be low - it causes hair loss and is v common after having a baby. You can just top up with a pill everyday until your own levels come back up again

take vitamin b supplements - really high levels (any excess you will just pee out)

are you on beta blockers or have you taken steroids recently? they can both cause hair loss

Moonshake · 23/08/2019 00:14

Mine only fell out for a month or two I think, and then started to grow back. But then I had loads short spiky bits of hair for ages, which wouldn't lie flat no matter what I did. Bad hair times.

itiswhatitis12 · 23/08/2019 00:17

@mumaw yes!
I went to the doctor and she said that when you're pregnant your hair doesn't fall out and you grow extra hair... then when you stop being pregnant your body goes back to normal!

cstaff · 23/08/2019 00:25

This happened my sister after her first baby. It lasted a few months I think. Not sure what stage it started but it does appear to be commonplace.

justasking111 · 23/08/2019 00:30

My friend had this her iron levels were on the floor. Please see a GP

transformandriseup · 23/08/2019 00:32

The exact thing is happening to me and my baby is nearly 4 months. A few strands come out each time I brush.

dointhedo · 23/08/2019 15:33

DD is 5 months old and I've been losing handfuls for about a month now. Every time I shower or brush my hair I can't believe how much comes away. My hair feels noticeably thinner and I have bald/tufty patches at the temples.

Luckily I remembered this from when DS was born 4 years ago and hopefully it will start to slow down a bit in the next few weeks.

I'm giving some Alpecin shampoo a go although it's too early to tell whether it's helping. Also have a hairdresser's appointment booked in for a couple of weeks' time and I think I'll go a lot shorter and change my parting until my hair recovers so that it's less obvious, ready for my return to work.

Hang on in there and definitely get it checked if you're worried. Not 100% sure the super glossy pregnancy hair was worth it now!
