To think a wooden spoon can't make any difference?

I read a 'handy hint' on the internet - put a wooden spoon across a saucepan to stop it boiling over.

How would that work, scientifically?

Does it actually make any difference?

Yes, it works

Camomila · 14/08/2019 13:14

Maybe some of the water vapour gets absorbed into the spoon? (Just a guess)

A tiny bit of olive oil in the water works.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 14/08/2019 13:16

I think it bursts the bubbles and stops them forming a big mass.

FlamedToACrisp · 14/08/2019 13:17

I thought maybe it popped the bubbles when they reached the top, but I can't see how it would help.

it doesn't work....

dollydaydream114 · 14/08/2019 13:18

I’ve never tried it but the explanation I’ve seen given is that it bursts and disperses the bubbles, and also absorbs heat and steam (which is why it doesn’t work with metal, which is too reflective).

I don’t know if this is true but that’s what I’ve read.

It works. But dont know how it works Blush

it is entirely dependant on how much water is in the pot...surely?

KUGA · 14/08/2019 13:36

It works the spoon isn't as hot as the water in the pan.
Therefore cools the water a little.

You’re never too old for a science experiment. Smile

The video I linked shows you it just ISN'T TRUE.

it is entirely dependant on how much water is in the pan....

Get outta here with evidence, Binary

Never worked when I've done it 😬

Branster · 14/08/2019 13:51

No idea how it works but it works when cooking pasta.

isthismylifenow · 14/08/2019 13:53

Magic things wooden spoons Grin

Whip up your mashed potato with one next time.

No bog standard spoon is going to get it all creamy like that.

chocolatemademefat · 14/08/2019 13:54

Glad I know it doesn’t work. I have a stainless steel hob which is a nightmare to clean so good tip
