Out of date sausages!

howisitgoingtoend · 12/08/2019 11:51

I just cooked some sausages and me and my DD aged 7 ate half of one before I realised they were out of date last week!

I only bought them the other day and they're those cheaper ones in the papery/plastic wrapping and I always thought they had a long shelf life so I didn't think to look!

Are we going to die! I don't really know what to do except sit and wait to see if we get ill?! 😩😩😩

Did they feel slimy when you took them out of the packaging? Taste bad? Smell isn't always a good indicator with sausages. I think if they looked, felt and tasted ok and were stored properly then the chances are they were ok and you won't get ill. Fingers crossed for you!

It's only Monday, so when last week? Sausages can be a bit dodgy, I tend to keep an eye on dates and cook them on the use by and then they last a couple more days and can be reheated or eaten cold. If you cooked them thoroughly though and you didn't notice/smell anything strange you've probably got away with it.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 12/08/2019 12:08

i am sure you will be fine! If they didn't seem weird they probably were good.

There was a whole thread last summer (maybe) about someone's DH who rescued some out of date sausages from the bin as he thought the OP was being wasteful, and iirc that packet was damp and fizzy

He survived without even the slightest indigestion!

Nesssie · 12/08/2019 12:09

You'll be fine. You cooked them to a high temperature.

familycourtq · 12/08/2019 12:10

People have been eating sausages way longer than we’ve had use by dates.

Oysterbabe · 12/08/2019 12:11

What was the actual date on them? I'd be comfortable it was within maybe 3 days.

Sparklesocks · 12/08/2019 12:40

You’ll be alright I’m sure, at worst a dodgy tummy

Bwekfusth · 12/08/2019 13:11

I wouldn't worry. Especially if the package was still sealed.

MrsTommyBanks · 12/08/2019 13:16

I think it's easy to see if sausages are on the turn, let alone off. They go slimey and have an obvious bad smell. I think you will be fine.

Wingedharpy · 12/08/2019 13:20

OP, I can tell you with absolute certainty that you are going to die , one day - it's not optional.
As regards your sausages, nothing to be done now except wait and see.
At least if you start with d and v you'll know what caused it, though, half a sausage isn't likely to cause you a problem.

howisitgoingtoend · 12/08/2019 14:26

They were out of date on the bloody 6th!! They were a sealed pack and they seemed fine when I cooked them, I only checked because I was filling out my diary and didn't realise we were already on the 12th!

I normally always check the dates on things before I cook them I don't know why I didn't this time, it was first thing in the morning and I wasn't fully awake, that's my excuse!
