Extreme Language and emotional abuse

When I was young, my mum used a LOT of extreme Language with me - usually along the lines of 'You are diagusting' or 'You are pathetic', but also 'He'll kill me' (referring to borfriend) or 'If you do x,y,z, I'll kill you'. She also, occasionally used positive language ('you are wonderful', 'an angel'), but mostly it was extreme negatives. She still does this (largely about herself - 'ifx doesn't happen I'll kill myself', 'ive put on weight I'm diagusting' (she's a size 6).

Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about it lately, and how much this language has f!ked me up! And f!ked up my siblings!! and thats just the language, before you get to any physical stuff.

I'm just wondering if any of you had parents (have parents) like this, what the effect has been for you, and how you've overcome it all(?)

I'm also just thinking how crazy the power of language is .... I mean, to actually tell your child you'll kill them is bonkers isn't it?
