Hence my third post in two days.

Is it normal to come back when you have left the builders here to no milk, sugar and very low levels of tea and coffee? Yes Confused

I had builders in a few months ago and left coffee, tea, sugar, milk and the mugs I wanted them to use on a tray next to the kettle so they had no need to look anywhere else. I left them plenty, but it meant they didn't use my 'nice' coffee or put their wet dirty teaspoons in my nice clean sugar.

Watto1 · 30/07/2019 18:46

We had a builder in a few weeks ago. I asked him if he’d like a biscuit with his tea and held out the open biscuit tin. He said “Thank you very much” and took the entire tin out of my hands. I was expecting him to take one or two!

justthecat · 30/07/2019 18:49

Last time we had the builders in the plasterer picked up MY freshly made cup of tea and said thanks love 🤨

Iamnotagoddess · 30/07/2019 18:55

I didn’t say help yourselves (I don’t really mind) but surely they should buy me some bloody milk and sugar?

They left their dirty cups too.

I haven replaced them so will see what happens tomorrow.

I’d say it’s pretty standard for builders to be able to help themselves to tea/ coffee. I’d expect them to leave cups too.

Pipandmum · 30/07/2019 19:01

I’ve had some builders who bring their own kettle and supplies, and I’ve also offered others to help themselves. I do not make tea for them unless they are just here for a few hours, otherwise I’d be doing it constantly.
They shouldn’t have helped themselves. But it’s petty to ask them to replace stuff, and I’ve never known a builder to actually wash a cup!
Are they due back? If so next time leave out the milk etc and leave them to it. I think builders in for the day expect tea and biscuits.

Jemima232 · 30/07/2019 19:02

I hope you've had a separate, new toilet installed for their exclusive use, OP.

BIWI · 30/07/2019 19:03

We're currently in week 7 of our build. Builders have not only brought their own tea and coffee, they also brought their own kettle!

BentNeckLady · 30/07/2019 19:04

I’m coming to the end of a 4 month build and as great as my builders are I can’t wait to see the back of them.

The noise, the dust, the shit everywhere. I hate it.

Tbh I think anyone who enjoys it must have something wrong with them. It is awful. This is the most stressed I’ve ever been.

MerryDeath · 30/07/2019 19:04

our builders have finished and i was pleased to see they brought all their own tea and coffee gear including kettle and milk!

Isithometimeyet0987 · 30/07/2019 19:04

Think it’s pretty normal for builders to have tea and coffee. They drank plenty at my house when I was getting work done I also left out biscuits they could help themselves to.

MerryDeath · 30/07/2019 19:05

i should add i was fully prepared to let them help themselves to ours !

Lovemenorca · 30/07/2019 19:05

If they’re inconsiderate like that - what are they like at tidying at end of the day?

Mine were incredibly polite and considerate about stuff like tea and toilets. And also very tidy.

VictoriaBun · 30/07/2019 19:07

You need to buy tea/coffee for builders only ( cheaper stuff) a plate of biscuits in the afternoon or cheap cake and your good to go ! I find it's better to get on their good side

Iamnotagoddess · 30/07/2019 19:09

@Lovemenorca don’t get me started on the cleaning up xx

MirrorHope · 30/07/2019 19:12

A builder tray - you need builder mugs, coffee, tea, tonnes of sugar and get some cheap digestives in - oh and I also have a builder/workman kettle. Set it all up for them and tell them which milk they can use - in the hot weather probably better not to leave the milk out. Sorted! I've done two large builds - I consider myself a build veteran.

Lovemenorca · 30/07/2019 19:15

Well in that case their work is likely to be shoddy.

Not tidying up at end of day is a red flag in bulldog trade

Chottie · 30/07/2019 19:16

I leave a tray out with mugs, coffee, tea, sugar and buy extra milk in too. I also provide buns or biscuits every day. I find it helps things to run smoothly. :)

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 30/07/2019 19:20

We had builders in for a good 4 months or so building our extension.

DH and I both felt keeping them fed n watered was the right thing to do. No way were they having our nice cups or coffee so we bought cheapish coffee, Asda's own sugar, bog std milk and a cheap box of biscuits. We left it out with our cheap ikea mugs and left them to it.

As xmas DH also bought them a few bottles of beer each (the work was from Nov to March). Just the right thing to do imo.

Oysterbabe · 30/07/2019 19:23

When I had builders in I made sure I bought extra tea, milk and biscuits for them. I thought that was pretty standard.

MyGirlDaisy · 30/07/2019 19:24

I have had builders in - I made them tea/coffee if I was here and left out a tray of stuff if I wasn’t. I offered/left squash when it was hot and replenished the biscuits daily. I also gave them access to the downstairs loo - if it was my DH I would like to think he was appreciated. They have been fantastic, and taken away rubbish etc that was ours not theirs (pallets, slabs etc) and been very respectful. Think we have been very lucky! I always offer a drink to repair men etc too, as pp said helps to get them on side.

Me too, but for the sake of an extra few pounds, I bought nice tea&coffee and indulgent biscuits.
Cost me an extra £4/5 than going for the cheapo budget options, but they appreciated as always thanking me for the “delicious” biscuits and “we don’t get biscuits like this at home” kind of joke

Cosentyx · 30/07/2019 19:27

I leave it all out for them to use including cups and plastic cutlery and some biscuits. Put the milk in a cool box if it's warm out and also bottled water and leave them to it.

theWarOnPeace · 30/07/2019 19:27

I get builder-rage too OP, I know how it is. But. YABU. Doesn’t everyone just shout out “tea and coffee on the side, help yourselves!” To builders? I mean yeah they drive me nuts, but I keep them going for my own benefit as well as theirs!

I have been known to chuck in frozen pizzas for them and occasionally buy sausage rolls. Again this is as much for my own benefit as theirs, as they then aren’t spending two hours a day in the caff 😅

BIWI · 30/07/2019 19:30

Oh, and the project manager is bringing us a box of chocolates every time he comes Smile

What I really can't stand though, as well as the dust, is the constant smell of cigarette smoke - but worst of all is the constant Euro pop!
