I have had a terrible time recently, my mum got kicked in the face by a horse, she was fine in the end but I saw it. My dad has lung cancer and is doing chemo but it’s on his spine also, we have got massively into debt to buy our house next door to them. I’m not getting on with her by, he drinks far too much (6 cans per day, but never really gets drunk)I’ve been drinking more n more and now having quarter to half a bottle of gin per day. I think I need to stop, do I need to speak to dr?

I’m sorry to hear you have had such a tough time. What is happening with your dad alone is very difficult and must be very hard to watch.
I can understand drinking a bit much to numb things.
The fact you are asking the question tells me that you are concerned. Have you found yourself unable to cut back?

LadyTennantofTardis · 29/07/2019 23:12

Was thinking all day today at work (a two hour commute which took me 2.5hours to get home today) that I’d be happy not to have any gin today. Everyone was so grumpy when I got home, I just went n got some

Just went to write down everything that’s making me sad and it’s so ridiculous. There is this girl, she is very annoying, not her fault, she did have a difficult childhood. She used to lodge with my parents and works for my mum. She really annoyes my dad, my mum moved her in when she got dumped by her boyfriend. I’m so angry, my poor dad, he is going through chemo with all the emotions and private symptoms and is sharing a house with someone he doesn’t like

I was going to come on and joke that you can never have too much gin, but that is a LOT of gin. How many pub measures is that? A quick Google tells me there is 28, 25ml measures in an average 70cl bottle. So half a bottle is the equivalent of 14 pub measures. A quarter bottle = 7.

I drink too much and can polish off a bottle of wine without too much trouble. 14 gins???? I would probably be paryletic and quite unwell, definitely sick.

This is not a judgement, just putting it in perspective.

Please see a dr, you are self medicating with alcohol and you need help to find another way to deal with what sounds like a horrendous time. There is little wonder you are struggling.

LadyTennantofTardis · 29/07/2019 23:28

No I’m not having 14 gins. I’m a bit drinker than 3/4 bottle of wine, which I was having before

LadyTennantofTardis · 29/07/2019 23:28

Sorry you are having a rough time. I sometimes find my gin consumption creeps up.

Assuming you are having gin and tonic tomorrow just have tonic. Make it in the same glass you normally would with ice and lime / lemon. Sip it slowly just like you would a GnT.

I find the ritual of having a drink almost has the same relaxing effect as an actual drink.

Best wishes for you and your family.

Everyone lives their best life on FB!!

I think the trouble with gin is that it actually tastes so lovely (unlike most alcohol which you have to sip) I can drink g&t like a soft drink.

Have you tried the non alcoholic ridiculously expensive sipsmith? Gin? Apparently really lovely. I do also like the fever Tree tonics without gin. Especially the Mediterranean one.

Alternate one with gin, one without.

I've had lots of counselling- it took me a long time to fond the right counsellor.

I hope things look up for you soon Flowers

LadyTennantofTardis · 30/07/2019 15:58

Thanks for suggestions, will try tonic only tonight

Good luck lady I’ve just got the tonic water myself.

Nacreous · 30/07/2019 17:54

I like tonic and bitters. Bitters are very alcoholic but you only have a few drops so it's essentially a non alcoholic drink. Gives it a bit more of an edge than tonic water alone. Angostura bitters usually, but I've been meaning to try some orange bitters.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 30/07/2019 17:54

Bloomin auto correct

That was meant to be I’ve just hit the tonic water myself

BogglesGoggles · 30/07/2019 18:08

Maybe try the non-alcoholic gibs as a substitute?
