To hate the word ‘Mumma’??

Just makes me cringe! I don’t get it - is it meant to be a posher version of ‘mama’? I suddenly see so many people referring to themselves, or their own mothers as ‘Mumma’. Irrationally annoys me Grin

Mama has at least three pronunciations.

One is just the same 'ma' sound twice like Freddie Mercury singing 'Mama.. just killed a man..' in bohemian rhapsody, or the way abba sing 'mama mia'. It's used in lots of countries.

Or the 'posh' Downton abbey way, muh-mar where the second syllable rhymes with car.

Or people like my DH who pronounce it like 'Mumma' is pronounced, i.e. mum with an a. He claims he can't say mama with two 'a' sounds, which is really odd to me as he manages to say 'dada' without saying 'duda', but whatever.

I find people calling me 'mumma', 'mum' 'mummy' etc odd and a bit grating, because I use 'mama' with the first pronunciation. I'm happy for others to use those terms for themselves if they want, why would I care what other people want to be called?

Definitely irritating but not as irritating as adults calling children bubs, bubba, babba. 😡

littlewriggler · 29/07/2019 15:36

@DontCallMeShitley I hate nanny for grandma, my MIL is insisting on it and it's her choice but I bloody hate saying it!

Partly because she isn't a goat, partly because she isn't providing any nannying services!

DontCallMeShitley · 29/07/2019 15:40

@littlewriggler
Yep, that too, can't you 'forget' and call her something else?

hellsbellsmelons · 29/07/2019 15:51

I call my mum that.
She has quite bad Alzheimer and it would confuse her no end if I started calling her something else.
I'm happy with my choice

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 29/07/2019 15:52

The only one that's worse is Mama.

I'll tell DD to stop right away. I mean, never mind that she's using the word for mum in my native language. Couldn't possibly upset the sensibilities of random people.
🙄

Rockbird · 29/07/2019 15:53

I love it. It's what my 11 and 7 year olds call me and I'll be devastated when they stop. Don't give a toss what anyone else thinks.

Rockbird · 29/07/2019 15:56

Lol should have read your various updates Grin

My son chose to call me it as a child, and as an adult he still does over 20 years later. I really don't care if anyone else doesn't like it or finds it childish. It's part of the strong bond we have, it came from him and at that time I'd never heard it used, I did make a few requests for him to call me mummy back then but he was fixed on mumma so it stayed. Had no idea it was an Instagram thing. But that's because the best way to deal with distractions like Instagram is to ignore it. If seeing other women refer to themselves as mumma upsets you just don't look.

ShabbaDo · 29/07/2019 16:06

4yo DD calls me mumma. I think it goes back to the days when I was teaching her to speak 'mummummummummum' - saying it aloud it does sound like mumma.

She's only a child. I'm sure she hasn't woken up one morning deciding to call me mumma just to piss off the ranty lady on MN.

ShabbaDo · 29/07/2019 16:10

Just seen the clarification.
Apologies.

I don't use SM and, if there are mums referring to themselves as mama, I'm glad I don't.

hairyturkey · 29/07/2019 16:52

It's nothing on 'boobing'.

Youaremysunshine6 · 29/07/2019 17:54

@TiredSloth you’ve misread - I haven’t said it’s the children I find annoying, it’s the women who call themselves it!
