Would everyone think of Tony Blair?

DH really wants to call our soon to be born next DD, Blair. He’s American and it’s a sort of preppy NYC name over there. But I )and other people) can’t help but think of Tony Blair who I really don’t like.

However, would that be different for DDs generation as I have three children with ex husband who are all ages between 15 and 21. They were all born in the Blair years from the late 90s to early/mid 00s and they do know a lot about him and the Iraq war etc but the DDs especially think of Gossip girl before him and they’re all 15/20 years older than our soon to be DD will be as well.

So no matter what you think of the name and how nice/not very nice it is, aibu to ask if you think people will automatically think of Tony Blair when she is growing up?

Yes, probably. It also doesn’t really sound like a girls name?

Saucery · 26/07/2019 17:25

I think of Blair Witch and Linda Blair from The Exorcist, if that helps?

Morgan12 · 26/07/2019 17:26

Gossip girl for me

clarenceduke · 26/07/2019 17:28

@HeadintheiClouds According to DH it is on the East coast of the US. DD supported this using gossip girl as an example Grin

Born in 1990. I think not of Tony but just very American.

Peanutbutter89 · 26/07/2019 17:30

I think of gossip girl and really like the name Blair for a girl!

Blondiecub0109 · 26/07/2019 17:30

Quite popular for boys in Scotland and I know of a girl Blayre

SilentAlarm · 26/07/2019 17:30

Born in 89 and wouldn’t think of Tony Blair, it just sounds unusual and American to me.

StoorieHoose · 26/07/2019 17:31

Loads of Blair's up here in Scotland. I think of it as a Scottish name rather than American cos we have lots of placenames starting with Blair

HeadintheiClouds · 26/07/2019 17:31

Maybe, but in Britain it’s primarily used for boys. It hasn’t got a particularly nice sound to me, but you clearly like it.

LaurieMarlow · 26/07/2019 17:31

I’d think of Blair Waldorf Blush

clarenceduke · 26/07/2019 17:31

@SilentAlarm Well I suppose she will be half American Grin

@Peanutbutter89 Good to know Smile

HeadintheiClouds · 26/07/2019 17:33

The sound is kind of like bleaugh. Not pretty.

clarenceduke · 26/07/2019 17:34

@LaurieMarlow When we first mentioned it to DD1 she laughed and asked if I was changing my surname to Waldorf/Wardolf (whatever it is Smile ) and it took us a while to figure out what she was on about Blush

I'm also in Scotland and know quite a few Blairs of different ages. I'd say it's a fairly popular name for boys here.

Seeingadistance · 26/07/2019 17:38

Thinking about it - the oldest Blair I know is a man in his early 80s. The youngest Blair is a toddler and I know Blairs of various ages in between those two ends of the age spectrum.

Witchend · 26/07/2019 17:38

My first thought would be along the lines of blaring-ie over loud
Blair Witch project followed by Tony Blair would be my thoughts once I found out it was a name.

Not convinced by it as a name.

Seeingadistance · 26/07/2019 17:40

Oh, wait, you're thinking of Blair for a girl.

I don't know it as a girl's name.

And for what it's worth, it doesn't sound like bleaugh when spoken by a Scot!

WhispersOfWickedness · 26/07/2019 17:44

My main association is the daughter in Christmas with the Kranks 😂

TSSDNCOP · 26/07/2019 17:56

I wouldn’t think of Tony.

How about Blythe, close but not so much in your head OP.

Leeds2 · 26/07/2019 17:58

I would think of Tony.

Malvinaa81 · 26/07/2019 18:04

Well it's just about better than Thatcher, which may well be another of those American names.

Limer · 26/07/2019 18:06

Lionel

sweetkitty · 26/07/2019 18:11

Was just going to say I know quite a few boy Blairs up here in Scotland.
