Does dieting give you a buzz?

Or make you high a little bit? I thought I would think about food a lot and be really hungry etc but it's not like that in reality. Just feel kind of buzzy and my chronic pain seems better. Could it be ketosis?

i wondered if anyone else felt like this as I always seem to see people saying they think of food all the time etc. It seems to be the opposite for me. I don't seem to think of food at all.

Dieting doesn't but exercise does.

Areyoufree · 25/07/2019 11:46

Yes. I don't think it's necessarily a good thing, so worth keeping an eye on it. I can stop eating completely when dieting - I know the 'high' you are talking about. I have also been pretty close to an eating disorder (I have never needed outside help to start eating again, so I don't class it as an eating disorder, but I have been pretty underweight at times). However, this could be all coincidental - the high and my slightly skewed attitude towards food could be utterly unrelated!

ddl1 · 25/07/2019 11:48

I wish!

thecatsthecats · 25/07/2019 11:50

I get this when fasting, not dieting.

It's actually harder for me to eat a little than not at all for a few hours.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 25/07/2019 11:52

Yes - I have been anorexic
Agree about exercise too

ComtesseDeSpair · 25/07/2019 11:59

I enjoy feeling hungry and generally feel much more energetic and lively than when I’m not. No eating disorder, just never eat in the go or snack, prefer to wait until I can eat something decent.

user87382294757 · 25/07/2019 12:12

Ok yes I am fasting too. Maybe that is causing it. Finding it much easier just to fast rather than eat smaller portions etc. Not anorexic - do need to lose weight to get to BMI 25 from around 28. It is also easier in the heat! I reckon from reading some stuff it might be ketosis. I would usually exercise but too hot!

@user87382294757

It kind of does a bit.

TMI, but I had food poisoning 11-12 days ago, and I lost 5 pounds in the 2 days that I had the sickness and diarrhoea. After the bug had cleared off, I started to eat healthier (and eat less.) Not a strict diet, but just cutting out crap. I have lost 4 pounds since. So 9 pounds altogether in 2 weeks. Also, my shorts and jeans feels a bit looser, and I feel better (less stodgy IYSWIM.)

Also, I have lost 1.5" off my waist in 2 weeks! Shock

This has given me the motivation I needed to lose weight (I need to lose 3 stone... well, 2 stone 5-ish now!) I have also been for a few fast walks this past few weeks, but can't atm because it's too HOT.

I can't help it. I do feel better when I am losing weight. I feel healthier, and I feel proud of myself for losing weight/looking better/being generally healthier. Surely, most people do?

Not sure I can get on board with 'fasting' though OP.

OoohOnly90CaloriesIllhave10 · 25/07/2019 12:15

I do get a bit of a kick out of the hunger feeling and not 'giving in' to it.

This is good because I've never been overweight.

But I took it too far when my friend died and I lost a lot of weight.

OoohOnly90CaloriesIllhave10 · 25/07/2019 12:16

Oh the irony of my current username 😆

user87382294757 · 25/07/2019 12:17

I have to say I am surprised by the pain relief thing. I am trying to stop taking painkillers anyway (prescribed co-codomol) I love my food also Blush so it is a bit of a surprise. Yes intermittent fasting might be the way for me. I guess we are all different and different things suit different people.

MysweetAudrina · 25/07/2019 12:18

Unfortunately not as much of a high as stuffing my face with nice food does.

user87382294757 · 25/07/2019 12:18

It's not even getting a kick out of the hunger thing here, that has gone. Bit weird. Much more hungry when eating more.

RubberTreePlant · 25/07/2019 12:18

Extreme dieting or fasting does. Maybe the ketosis causes it?

OoohOnly90CaloriesIllhave10 · 25/07/2019 12:20

Mines definitely linked to the feeling of hunger.

I'm hungry right now but I will keep putting off lunch until I feel sick. Sometimes skip it al together

user87382294757 · 25/07/2019 12:20

I think it must be the ketosis thing. I'm not one for testing ketones and the like...but think after say 12-14 hrs not eating it kicks in. meant to anyway.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 25/07/2019 12:22

In the short term. Once it lasted six months and I lost 4 stone and it honestly felt effortless at the time.

When I crash, I crash - back where I started now. I did get an under active thyroid in the meantime but it’s mostly emotional eating. I think this is what people mean when they say dieting doesn’t work- it works for a while but it’s not sustainable for many people.

user87382294757 · 25/07/2019 12:23

If I exercise in the mornings while fasted, that makes the hunger totally go away, it's kind of weird. Drinking water also

Maybe this is how you're meant to feel all the time, but eating crap food made you feel awful?

Jenasaurus · 25/07/2019 12:24

I get this if i on a vlcd. It’s a feeling of wellbeing and I’m control.

user87382294757 · 25/07/2019 12:28

Yes i think crap food / sugary high GI food definitely made me have sugar ups and downs. Not good. I don't eat that much of it though, so can't be just that.

I am also trying to do fasting for brain health. I have a gene for dementia risk and intermittent fasting is meant to help the brain. Interesting.

Found this article about this 'fating high'. Going to try eating another hard boiled egg for 'lunch' to see if it continues. theconversation.com/feeling-euphoric-on-a-low-carb-diet-the-effect-on-your-brain-is-similar-to-an-illicit-drug-76303

Yeah I’m going to need to hide this thread - it is reminding me how good it feels and not in a healthy way

user87382294757 · 25/07/2019 12:43

I'm sorry if it is an issue for people with an eating disorder.
