To ask a childcar seat question

Apologies, I am posting here for traffic.

Currently packing my car to take my 6yr old and 4month old away for a month and space is tight!

The drive is about 2 hours, would i be unreasonable to put my 6yr old in the front passenger seat (in the correct child seat of course) so that i can collapse the back seat to make more space?

I'm not sure i would feel comfortable doing so but have tried to repack 3 times and still cant get it all in. Why oh why didn't I think ahead and get a roof box?!

I would. Just slide it back as far as it will go.

AbbyHammond · 25/07/2019 11:12

We always have a child in the front seat as can't fit 3 seats across the back.

moreismore · 25/07/2019 11:13

I would but check your manual re: airbags and fitting a car seat there.

Camomila · 25/07/2019 11:14

Just remember to dismantle the front passenger airbag.

OhWifey · 25/07/2019 11:21

Check your manual first re how they advise having a child seat in the front.

But. And this is a big but. Having the back seat down for luggage is very dangerous for baby unless the luggage is all completely secured. In the event of an accident the luggage/buggy/anything not tied down will fly. Even light items like bottles of water can become deadly projectiles in a crash. So I would think very carefully before taking this option. If I really had to I'd tie everything down as much as possible and also be very careful with positioning of items to protect the baby in a crash.

I wouldn't for the same reasons as ohwifey has said.
Anything that is able to move around In a car in the event of an accident is very dangerous and luggage is very heavy so from a safety aspect I wouldn't do this

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 25/07/2019 11:53

Yep, same as @OhWifey

I would be ok about the 6 year old in the front but I worry about things flying around the car in the event of a crash.

Lazypuppy · 25/07/2019 12:01

I would put either child in the front. Sometimes my dd (now 18months) is in the front passenger seat (especially if i have 3 passengers), other times in the back.

Rear facing car seat - dismantle air bag
Forward facing - oush seat back with air bag on (i believe, check car seat manual)

The front is the least safe position in a car, any of the back seats are safer. Personally I'd pack less.
