AIBU for washing my Hillarys vertical blinds?

They came out of the machine in a ball of string where the thread on the sides of the slats just unravelled. I could cry.
They were bloody expensive to buy.
Does anyone know if you can buy the vertical slats from a cheaper company as I really can't afford Hillarys prices.

I'm such a dope.

Or is there a cheaper company who would replace the whole lot for a cheap price? Would they have to remove the metal runner thing at the top?

Yes you were unreasonable. Who washes blinds? Of course the spin cycle of the washing machine is going to get them all tangled up 🙄 30 seconds on google tells you not to wash them in the machine, just wipe them.

If you need made-to-measure it will be expensive. If your window is a standard size and you have the rail still from your current blinds, you could probably get a cheaper set from somewhere like dunelm

StrongTea · 24/07/2019 07:33

Replaced my vertical blind slats because they were getting tatty. Used a company called tudor blinds, think they are in Ireland. Came in a roll with weights and cords attached just had a hang them up. Really pleased with them, better than what I had. They do samples.

TeamUnicorn · 24/07/2019 07:36

Oh no.

You generally can get replacement slats and I can't think why they wouldn't be ok especially as you would be replacing all the slats.

Good luck.

You can buy replacement slats very cheaply on the internet

FredaFox · 24/07/2019 07:45

I’m in a rented property with vertical blinds, how do you clean them?

chunn65 · 24/07/2019 07:46

I wash my blinds. remove all the slats, cords anything attached the weights. Line them up together add loose elastic/ string to keep together, put them in a pillow case and machine wash on 30 min cycle NO Spin, they come out so clean! So it is possible. Youtube it. Could you contact the company and order the badly screwed up ones, if any.

Purplejay · 24/07/2019 07:49

I wouldn’t have risked putting them in the washer! I guess you could wash them in the bath.

My mum used to wash metal Venetians by spreading on a plastic sheet outside and using hot soapy water, a yard brush and rinse with hosepipe!

Wherearemyminions · 24/07/2019 07:49

blinds2go are pretty good for choice and price, and I wash mine, soak them first in the bath and then a gentle rinse in machine, no spin and 6 max at a time in machine, been doing this for years with no problem.

Yerroblemom1923 · 24/07/2019 07:51

Don't you just wipe over each slat with a damp cloth? That's what I do.

Will they be compatible with the Hillarys ones?

I knew I wasn't supposed to wash them, but figured, they're fabric, what harm could it do........... Absolute div.

Thing is I smoke in the flat, so it's not just dust on them, there obviously was a coating of tobacco too. Not only am I thick, I'm a thick filthy smoker Sad

I'd just buy the slats if I figured they'd hang using the same fittings as the Hillarys ones.

StCharlotte · 24/07/2019 08:13

Damn. I hoped this would be a thread saying how to wash them (although mine's a roller blind) the salesman lied with his "damp cloth" bollocks.

StrongTea · 24/07/2019 08:26

Sure the fittings are universal. Worked out around £1 a slat.

ThatPairOfCats · 24/07/2019 08:31

Doesn't help you now but I wash mine in the dishwasher. 247 Blinds are good.

Sallycinnamum · 24/07/2019 08:34

247 blinds are great and they do lots of coloured vertical blinds.

longwayoff · 24/07/2019 08:37

YABU for having vertical blinds. Replace with practically anything else.

Biancadelrioisback · 24/07/2019 08:37

I had mine made to measure at Dunelm as it wasn't that expensive. Also have never washed them Blush

dot91 · 24/07/2019 08:39

I wash my vertical blinds in the bath & hang outside wet . Bring them back in after 40 min still damp & hang back up .

burblife · 24/07/2019 09:00

We bought a new set from blinds2go when we moved into our house as previous owners had taken them with them! Came rolled up in a bundle. Could choose colour, length and how many slats (width). We got weights in the bottom of ours so no cords to mess with. They just clip onto the little clips on the rail.

LoafOfSellotape · 24/07/2019 09:08

You used to be able to get them in Argos,my friend I formed me after I'd spent a fortune on some-won't be doing that again!

IAskTooManyQuestions · 24/07/2019 09:08

Hindsight is a wonderful thing - next time , roll the blinds up, like a toilet roll tube and put an elastic band round each one. Then stack in a pillow case, and tie a knot in it so they cant move round. Then put on a light trainer or silk wash. remember to remove the bottom weights - and in need you can get replacement weights etc from ebay

Thump · 24/07/2019 15:47

@strongtea Do you have details for the place you got the replacement slats from?

OP posts:
ginginchinchin · 24/07/2019 15:56

The top hangers aren't all universal but if you keep the ones from the existing drapes you can swap them over if you need to.
