To leave my aircon unit on all day while I'm at work on Thursday?

Has anyone ever left a domestic air conditioning unit on all day when they aren't home?

I'm trying to weight up the paranoia between burning house down and potentially losing elderly heat-sensitive pets to heatstroke on Thursday 😣 it's supposed to be 37 and my flat is above a shop which means it's even hotter than most flats at the best of times.

I do sometimes put it on the timer to come on for two hours at midday when it's warm but leaving in on unattended for 11 hours seems a big leap. Don't know what to do 😖 What do we think; is it a 'you shouldn't really but people get away with it' or 'thats shit's seriously dangerous'

I would probably turn it off when I leave in the morning, it should stay cool for a few hours as it’s early and also I would presume you would have had it on already? Then maybe set the timer so it comes on at say 11:30 for 5 hours? That should take you through the hottest part of the day and then it should stay cool for a few hours anyway?

Didntwanttochangemyname · 23/07/2019 11:40

I've left mine on all day, but only by accident. The house didn't burn down but I was anxious all day. I think the poster above has the solution - run it in the morning until you leave, then have it come on for a few hours. Do you have a friend or neighbour who can pop in to check on the animals?

GeorgiaGirl52 · 23/07/2019 12:19

If it an inside or window unit I would turn it off. But when it is hot I freeze a metal bowl full of water overnight and set it out when I leave the next morning. The frozen water thaws slowly in the metal and by noon they have a lovely bowl of cool water.

Many people leave the things on all night without burning their homes down. This is just during the day instead - and the unit doesn't know, does it?

MmmBlowholes · 23/07/2019 12:36

Loafofsellotape PETS 😂

Stillstrawberrywater · 23/07/2019 12:40

It will be fine to run the air con during the day yes, its just the extra electricity usage you have to keep tabs on.

Twickerhun · 23/07/2019 12:42

If you draw all curtains and shut the windows it should stay cool without aircon?

Twickerhun · 23/07/2019 12:43

I’m from a really hot country and we wouldn’t leave aircon on all day, it’s not expected to be that hot!

Mintysmoons · 23/07/2019 12:44

We leave ours to come on on a timer for our pampered pooches!

TalentedMsRipley · 23/07/2019 12:45

Elderly PETS.

WHY DON'T PEOPLE READ POSTS PROPERLY???

Canuckduck · 23/07/2019 12:45

It will be fine. In many countries they are on continually all summer. Does it have a thermostat built in to switch itself off once it’s cool enough?

S1naidSucks · 23/07/2019 12:45

Are you saying your parents will be in your flat? Confused

WHY DON'T PEOPLE READ POSTS PROPERLY???

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING? ANY WAY IT WAS A FUNNY MISTAKE!

LoafOfSellotape · 23/07/2019 12:47

FFS I thought the OP said PARENTS not PETS 🙄😂😂😂

happydays00 · 23/07/2019 12:48

@Twickerhun it's supposed to get up to 39 degrees on Thursday in some parts of the country. Nearly 40 degrees is hot by anyone's standards 😒

@thisnamechanger I've left mine on by accident before and it was fine. I'd go with the first suggestion though re a timer. What pets have you got? Would a cool mat work?

Why the paranoia about it setting itself on fire? They're built to run and run. It'll cost you a few quid in power but that's nothing compared to keeping a pet alive and comfortable.

m00rfarm · 23/07/2019 12:59

Leave it on - we leave them on all the time for hours and apart from the cost it is fine. And they are not as expensive to run as (for example) electric heaters in the winter.

BertieBotts · 23/07/2019 13:01

It will be fine. Leave it on.

SinkGirl · 23/07/2019 13:06

Any chance you have Hive or similar? You could turn it on and off. Or use a timer plug?

seaeagle · 23/07/2019 13:07

I live in the tropics - it's quite normal for us to leave the aircon on all day when we're out. No problem.

PhDone · 23/07/2019 13:10

The pet shop near us does the frozen water bottle thing for small animals, they can sit near it if they're hot :)
