AIBU to think that I could be starting the Perimenopause

I am 44 and have had the copper coil for 9 years. During this time I have had phases of heavy periods but they have settled down to a cycle length of 21-25 days for the past few years. For a while I have had occasional spotting when I am mid cycle. A couple of months ago I had an extra period which started a few days after my last one ended. This month my period arrived at the normal time but was v light, (sorry TMI but literally only blood loss was light after a toilet visit, blood definitely period blood). Today is day 8 and I have suddenly (literally whilst walking home) started having a full on period. Has anyone had anything similar. Definitely not pregnant. Just wondering if it could be the peri. Went for a smear a couple of month ago and told the nurse about the extra period, she said it could be some sort of transition

Could be, but also, it's pretty common for periods to change and become irregular in your 40s. I'm 45 and for the last five years my cycle has gone from being 30-35 days to being 20-70 days, with corresponding changes in how varied the flow is.

Yes I went through this for 2 years. Are you feeling any other symptoms?

BeenThereDone · 22/07/2019 20:28

43yo and mine are either a week early or a week late. Can be very very light or full on tsunami.... Can last a day or two or over a week and all the variations of the above you can think of..

But I was told I'm still to young to be peri menopausal....

Lifeafte · 22/07/2019 21:38

Like the above poster I too have been told your too young for peri or meno, I'm 42 and don't belive what the docs say on this one. My periods have gone from 28 day cycle 7 day period to longer to shorter and then back to 28 and 7. Now they are generally 27 and 5 days. They stop in the middle for two days where I go through pms all over again and then come back. Some months they are really light and others heavy. I tried the combined pill but it didn't do my mood any good. Tried the mire a coil and I just bled 4 ever. My symptoms started 3 years ago after the birth of my son. I also have intolerance to heat, hot flushes, palpation for two weeks of the month and really bad low moods around mid cycle and end of cycle. Had enough! So yes I believe it really is possible it's peri

Could well be peri menopause.
Mine started at about 45yo (although I didn’t realise it at the time).
My periods had always been regular but then I had an extra period which started a few days after the last one finished. Everything went back to normal for a year or so, then out of the blue, another extra period. Everything went back to normal again, but slowly, over time my periods became more irregular and unpredictable.
Apologies if it’s not really what you wanted to hear.

Notreallyhappy · 22/07/2019 21:56

I'd say yes it's starting.
Mine were like that for years..I'm 52 now, no period for 11 months then 2 day spotting..hold tight your in it for the long haul, sadly 😬😫🙂

I have a lot of the symptoms, the most upsetting one is really bad acne on my chin and jawline. I went to speak to the doctor and he prescribed me a 3 month course of antibiotics, said it wasn't the menopause despite me telling him about irregular periods, night sweats, hot flushes, achey joints, headaches

lljkk · 22/07/2019 22:24

What would you do, OP, if U knew for sure it is peri?

boopydoopydo · 22/07/2019 22:26

Sounds like it to me, mine are all over the place too. I have a period, skip one, have spotting mid cycle, then a mega heavy one, skip one....it's a nightmare as I can't plan anything.

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 23/07/2019 08:10

I haven't got the irregular bleeds as still on the combined pill but I'm ultra hormonal, have period like pains and get hot for prolonged periods of time.I did a thread on my symptoms but got hardly any replies.Im 39

It could be perimenopause, there are also a few other things it can be like nutritional deficiencies or more concerning ones.

I'd recommend continuing to track and getting things checked out. It can be difficult - some GPs seem to like sweeping everything under 'it's menopause, get on with it' and others seem convinced it can't happen under a certain age but still won't do anything [essentially 'it's your cycle/getting older, get on with it] - but the best thing I've done is going over the NICE Guidelines on menopause with a GP and discussing what screenings would be best for me to know the best way to go forward.

Hi I am unsure why doctors are saying too young to be in peri? My doc has made it clear that it can start at different ages, I'm 46 been in it 2 years, anxiety acne mood swings sweats irregular bleeds, tired a hey headaches the list goes on, they never questioned that I was in my 40s?? I can tell you that it's different for all and that I have had the merina coil and estrogen gel recommended for acne heart protection and other symptoms. Oh and the blood tests to say yes or no are so dependent on where you are in your cycle that it's not worth doing them loads of false negative results. I'm using walking for the horrendous period pains and cbd oil from Holland and barret for night sweats and hot flushes, working well enough, am having coil refitted and getting gel as acne at my age and the weight gain is horrible but get your fitness levels up now before it gets really hard. Good luck girls.
