To be worried about my Mirena?

museumum · 21/07/2019 17:31

Got a Mirena IUD in February 2016. It’s supposed to be removed “by February 2021”.
From the first month I got it 3.5 years ago i had no periods, occasionally light spotting but literally just a smear on wiping one day a month.
This month = 🦈 shark attack!! Loads of bright red blood.
Proper period.

IABU to be very fearful it’s stopped working???
(Although married with a 6yr old, I do NOT want to get pregnant again).

It’s possible it’s came out. Can you get your gp to refer you for a scan to check if it’s still in position.

TheQueef · 21/07/2019 18:07

I was about to post the same.
Make sure it's still in.

Can you feel the strings?

RedSheep73 · 21/07/2019 18:10

I am sure they will check it for you at your doctors. You are supposed to be able to feel the strings yourself, although I must confess I never do. Personally I would be really surprised if it had come out without you noticing, my experience is that getting it out at all is pretty eye watering. I would also say that I've also noticed the period-suppression getting less as you get towards the end of the 5 years (I'm on my third now). But if you are worried, do get it checked.

Scotinoz · 21/07/2019 18:13

I had exactly this! In for about 3 years with no periods, then full on regular as clockwork 😬 Had it checked and all fine, so was put down to 'one of those things'.

museumum · 21/07/2019 18:44

Well I’m glad I’m not alone. Find it hard to imagine it could come out without being detected, but I’ll check when my flow calms down.
Thanks.
Am still a bit worried that it might not be so effective now though.

I’ve had 3 Mirenas and after 4 years I always have periods. It’s common.
