To ask if colleges can do this and if so how common is it

PupsAndKittens · 18/07/2019 22:31

I have just spent the past year of the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Preforming Arts (Acting). Although I have enjoyed the year, due to my mental health there have been a lot of ups and downs regarding both my coursework and attendance. Today I found out that through our group chat that results had been given. However I checked both my personal and college email to find that nothing had been sent. I rang the college immediately to find out if a mistake had occurred (sent it to a wrong email etc) I was told that “unfortunately at this moment in time, they where not in a position to realise my grades”. When I asked why they told me that they could not “disclose” this. They also couldn’t tell me when I would receive my results either. Needless to say, I have spent a good majority of the day crying and panicking that I have Filed Sad.
It hasn’t helped that the rest of my class, has been bragging about how well they did on social media, which just makes me feel more shit! I just feel that it would of been courtesy of them to let me know. Not that it’s particularly relevant, however I do have ASD, meaning I do have moments of anxiety. What I would really like to know, is is this legal/common for colleges to do this.

My would refuse to release your grades (or threatened to, I’m not sure if they actually did) if you had overdue library fines. Could it be something as simple as that?

googlegoals · 18/07/2019 22:39

They could have been sent for moderation? I wouldn't worry too much if I were you!

BeanBag7 · 18/07/2019 22:41

Maybe they weren't able to disclose because they couldnt guarantee it was you on the phone. are you able to go in and speak to someone in person and take your college ID. It's really weird that they wouldnt tell you why!
If it's something like fees due, as suggested above, why wouldnt they tell you so you could out it right?
Good luck with your results

MyOtherProfile · 18/07/2019 22:44

Who do you mean by colleagues here? Not sure if you're asking if it's legal for colleagues to withhold your results or for them to brag on SM. Bit confusing as I wouldn't call either colleagues.

PupsAndKittens · 18/07/2019 22:44

@googlegoals in all fairness I believe that is the most likelyness, however I felt that Schools/Colleges had to inform the student. I also felt they had to sign for it. At school we had to for Media BTEC.

@SuperheroBirds whilst that makes sense (I do have a £4.00 fine Blush) surely that would’ve been disclosable and they would of told me there and then!

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 18/07/2019 22:46

@MyOtherProfile where has she said anything about colleagues? This is a thread about college.

stucknoue · 18/07/2019 22:47

Where a student hasn't met the full requirements they can look into mitigating circumstances or require resitting of elements. This may be the case, if you are local it's worth asking to meet with someone

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 18/07/2019 22:49

OP my uni also had a rule that you couldn't pass a year/graduate without paying any library fines even 50p, could also be moderation although that's usually done before results day. Maybe the person on the phone didn't know why your results couldn't be released and has just read what's on the system

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 18/07/2019 22:50

Did you apply for mitigating circumstances? It sounds like you should have been advised to

PupsAndKittens · 18/07/2019 22:50

@BeanBag7 I knew the person I was speaking to, they knew who I was. Thank you by the way Smile

@MyOtherProfile I haven’t use the word colleague, so a bit confused where you got that from. I am mostly asking if it’s normal for a college to withhold someone’s results.

OP posts:
MyOtherProfile · 18/07/2019 22:53

@TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan o my goodness you're right. I thought I was managing quite well without my glasses but clearly not! No wonder I was confused!

PupsAndKittens · 18/07/2019 22:57

@TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan @stucknoue I attempted to, SEN department said that they would see what they could do, but i didn’t hear anything from them regarding this so unsure if I was entitled. I think I’m going to give them another call tomorrow.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 18/07/2019 22:57

I don't know about colleges but my uni had no common sense at all about library fines. £4 would have been plenty. 20p would have done it.

I had to queue the day before to pay £1.80. Aghh.

I don't think it's bragging for your classmates to post on social media. They are just pleased with how they've done and because you're in such an (entirely understandable) panic it seems off.

Is there no one at college you can speak to. A tutor?

PupsAndKittens · 18/07/2019 22:58

@MyOtherProfile no worry’s it happens to best of us. Grin

OP posts:
PupsAndKittens · 18/07/2019 23:03

@Namechangeforthiscancershit My class absolutely has the right to announce their grades on social media. They are my friends, so I’m also really happy for them. Sorry if I’ve come across as being selfish or unreasonable. I know how hard everyone work ( particularly on Hamlet which was our end of year performance) so so happy they received what they wanted. Selfishly, to me however it’s just a reminder that mine couldn’t be “Disclosed”. really am happy though Smile

@PupsAndKittens Wine might blame it on this glass instead Grin

g0bbledyg00k · 18/07/2019 23:04

I didn't get results on time one year and when I investigated it was because I had had a number of mitigating circumstances and the examiners had decided to offer me a delayed first sit (uncapped) on one of my exams because my mark was low (but a pass). Could be a positive thing!

jarofheart · 18/07/2019 23:07

@MyOtherProfile you aren't the only one, I was baffled about what this had to do with colleagues too 🤦🏻‍♀️

literategiraffe · 18/07/2019 23:14

If the dept or your tutor are aware of the issues you've had I'd put my money on them either referring your work for moderation or further discussions with head of school or examiner.
Its not very unusual that they've not told you why yet as the results were only released today. Also, the person you spoke to may not have been able to disclose any info to you as they may not actually know the details. Plus, when my dept release results we're not allowed to tell people over the phone, only via email and only by the uni email address.
I'd email the admin office and cc in your tutor to clarify.

PupsAndKittens · 18/07/2019 23:14

@g0bbledyg00k I did miss one practical ( duologue) but spoke to my tutor when I came back with a “Sick Note”, he told me not to worry and they would figure it out

From what people are saying, mitigating circumstances are sounding more likely. Just wish that the college had told me that ( if the reason)

OP posts:
PupsAndKittens · 18/07/2019 23:21

@literategiraffe my department definitely know of my reasons. I will take you advice and email to beginning with because I know there is a lot of security/ safeguarding issues when talking about personal grades with someone and colleges have to be certain it’s the student in question.

OP posts:
Fruitbatdancer · 18/07/2019 23:26

Another one here saying the fine could be it! At my uni any fine meant withhold all grades.
Also- despite knowing you perfectly likely person you spoke to has no idea why? Just knows can’t tell you!

literategiraffe · 18/07/2019 23:26

That's good to hear OP!
I get so frustrated when students aren't proactive in keeping us informed if issues, we don't even need that much detail!
Remember that your dept do not want you to fail! Everywhere I've worked have always done their best to get students to pass!

PupsAndKittens · 18/07/2019 23:40

Over the weekend, I will go in and pay the fine, as the library is open all summer in my college. And whilst I’m there I’ll see if I can speak to someone face-to-face, this way they will be able to know it is me Smile

PupsAndKittens · 19/07/2019 21:54

College got back to me today, they want me to re-do one of my assignments. This has to be done by Friday. Thanks for everyone’s support Smile
