To buy a 5 year old a skateboard?

Nearly 5 year old DS really really wants a skateboard for his birthday. I don’t know where he’s got this idea, but it is all his heart desires.

To me it just seems like a trip to A&E waiting to happen (he’s pretty clumsy at the best of times).

Should I get one - if so what kind of board would you recommend?

Yes do it! Just make sure you get good protective gear, I had one at 6 and loved it. Then graduated to roller skates and derby.

From knowing the company and people who work there I’d use skateattack.co.uk always up on safety equipment and great boards.

My DS was the same. Buy a cheap one either from Amazon or Decathlon, together with knee and elbow protectors. He may loose interest and that's why I wouldn't buy an expensive one. DS lost interest after a while and refused to wear protective gear. He prefers his scooter, which he loves to take to the skating park.

Do it. Protective gear on and have fun.

With a proper fitting helmet, as well as good knee and elbow pads, it’s great exercise and could really help with balance. You could buy a cheap skateboard at any toy shop, and see if he loses interest before spending money on a better one.

My son got into skateboarding and quickly from there into scootering.

Contrary to the advice so far, do not go and buy a cheap skateboard. Unfortunately cheap boards have cheap components and the trucks don't turn. It's like buying a bike with handlebars that don't turn - nobody is going to be able to learn to ride it and it will end up in the bin (where it belongs). You should spent at least £30. The Rocket boards aren't bad for that age range. Around 7.25 inches wide will do it. I'd say suggest your local rider owned skate shop but often they don't carry these boards. If online go to skatehut or rollersnakes rather than Amazon. Decathlon isn't awful if you spend enough.. good luck. I hope your 5 year old enjoys many years of happy rolling.. Smile
