To dread holidays because I can’t sleep?

I enjoy the idea of going away for small breaks, but I can never sleep when I’m there, so it’s completely spoilt.

The reason i can’t sleep is that I’m not I’m my own bed. I take my own pillows etc.

AIBU to dread it? Even though I should be grateful for going away?

You don't have to go away! If you hate it because you can't sleep, don't do it!

Dandelionplease · 13/07/2019 12:19

I should also mention that I get really upset by not sleeping, as I like taking my DS places.

I'm a bit like this too. Have trouble sleeping anywhere new especially the first night. I usually just tell myself oh it's only for a few days or a week whatever and I can catch up on sleep when I'm back home.

Dandelionplease · 13/07/2019 17:03

Not just me then. It so annoying.

I'm the same! I am dreading a night in a hotel coming up as I know I'll be clock watching snd just wanting to go home
It's an age thing with me I think as I wasn't like it when I was younger

eavers · 13/07/2019 17:46

Me too! Premierinn are the worst for me

Dandelionplease · 13/07/2019 19:55

Glad it’s not just me !

I used to be like this! Could never ever sleep the first night of a holiday, and would spend the next day really tired and grumpy. I don't know what's changed but now I usually sleep fine, and if I don't I just tell myself it's one bad night and I'll nap the next day to catch up. Could you try napping? Would you sleep then?

Dandelionplease · 13/07/2019 20:02

Nope, have never been able to nap. No idea why Confused

I’m like this too. I love traveling but I am rubbish at sleeping in hotels or on planes. I’m ok sleeping at my parents but that about it.

I always prefer my own bed.

I can get a margarine through lack of sleep so that really messes up any holiday plans. I still go on holidays but I dread them really.

GrabbyGertie · 13/07/2019 20:10

Migraine not margarine 😅

Buttons4me · 13/07/2019 20:10

I don't sleep well either when we are on holiday and much prefer my own bed. It's so hard being away for a week and getting next to no sleep.

Dandelionplease · 13/07/2019 20:17

I’ve got a chronic illness too, which doesn’t help I suppose.

Half a Piriton tablet will help. Not addictive at all.

Try it. Do not go for the full dose or you will be semi comatose.

I buy the Dormedina when in Spain (same as piriton) 12.5mg and halve that. Works great.

The pharmacist over there said the normal dose is 25mg. Start off low is my view anyway.

Worth a try at home and then you will know.

The80sweregreat · 13/07/2019 20:27

I assuming we're all women on this thread as most men don't seem to have trouble sleeping anywhere ! Lol

christmasgeek · 13/07/2019 20:27

I’m exactly like this too , usually at least the first 2/3 nights, finally start to sleep and it’s time to come home again. The more I think about not being able to sleep, the worse it is . If you find a cure, let me know!

Dandelionplease · 13/07/2019 20:32

Outsomnia- thanks. will try it out!

Am also like this. In fact we are just back from staying one night somewhere and I think I finally dropped off around 1am and tossed and turned all night. Absolutely shattered today but thank goodness we are home and I can sleep in my own lovely bed.

AppleHEAD · 13/07/2019 20:38

Same here. It’s awful and invariably makes me anxious. Bloody pain in the neck.

Outsomnia · 13/07/2019 20:39

You are welcome @Dandelionplease.

Chipsahoy · 13/07/2019 20:42

Me too! I hate staying away from home. I can't sleep, I get anxious.. I do have cptsd and ishoos, but mostly doing OK.
We do go away, for the kids, but some years, like this, we are doing one overnight and then tons of days out.

The80sweregreat · 13/07/2019 20:44

I'd love to travel the world but still come back to my own bed!

soberken · 13/07/2019 21:01

@bridgetreilly You don't have to go away! If you hate it because you can't sleep, don't do it!

It's taken me 25 years to realise this. Finally I've actually said to myself "I'm not doing this again"

The80sweregreat · 13/07/2019 21:03

I've found my people! I really thought it was ' just me'

Dandelionplease · 13/07/2019 21:46

Yes! Travel the world and come home to own bed Grin
