to wonder if this is so normalised it's not reported?

I was walking along a main street off Regents today.

As I crossed the road I noticed a man sort of thrusting a bit and grappling with himself a bit, with a semi on, or bit more than a semi.

I then realised he was facing a woman who was trying to lock her bike to some scaffolder, so couldn't just walk away.

Maybe she did report him, but I warned a couple of other women that were walking toward him past me (as I was heading in the opposite direction).

What's the charge for something like this, is it seen as serious, or, oh just ignore him type thing?

I think I was a bit shocked and it didn't quite hit home until after I'd walked by and pieced together what was going on.

As a police call taker I can assure you a lot of people report this type of behaviour. It’s Indecdnt Exposure

Doidoit19 · 11/07/2019 01:48

Posted too soon. Indecent exposure. And can be punished by a prison sentence. I don’t know how many aren’t reported but we do definitely receive lots of calls about incidents that have happened of this nature.

TruthOnTrial · 11/07/2019 01:48

I really hope she called after securing her bike

He wasn't exposing himself, it was all under wraps but also very evident iyswim.

He was wearing loose clothing, like sweat pants.

Oh god, that's nasty. I'm sorry you saw that.

ReganSomerset · 11/07/2019 02:09

You could have reported it for her? Or gone to her aid?

LauderSyme · 11/07/2019 02:16

No it's not accepted as normal, nor should it be. Obviously not everyone who witnesses it reports it (yourself a case in point!) but many would take it very seriously. The police do too and rightfully so because indecent exposure is a red flag for escalation to more serious (sex) crimes.

Knitclubchatter · 11/07/2019 02:18

With Viagra a man can have a semi erection for hours, and some men have for medical reasons implants.
Men often “readjust” themselves.
If the penis isn’t exposed and there’s no masterbatory action I’m at a loss as to how you can prove the actions were intentional.
Of course if he’s nearby a woman bending over her bicycle that’s a different problem.

ReganSomerset · 11/07/2019 02:45

knitclub she doesn't have to prove anything. Civilians report something they think is a crime, police collect evidence. If there's not enough evidence then no case is brought. All OP would need to have done is report.

HennyPennyHorror · 11/07/2019 03:10

Knit wtf are you talking about "With viagra"?? What normal man thrusts his pelvis and grapples with the area in the direction of a random woman?

I tell you who...a pervert.

And if by some REMOTE chance it was a man who HAPPENED to have taken viagra and then gone out with a semi, a normal man wouldn't be thrusting at women and touching himself.

FFS.

Knitclubchatter · 11/07/2019 04:23

I know it’s pretty a remote and very unlikely scenario.

HennyPennyHorror · 11/07/2019 04:25

Then why mention it? I mean...I could come up with all kinds of weird and unlikely scenarios but I wouldn;t because OP was upset about it!

Rumplesmoothskin · 11/07/2019 06:19

Maybe a little bird fell down his trousers and he was trying to get it out so he was grappling down there, and he'd put his donations for the food bank down there too but the figdeting was making the tin of beans shift and it was sticking out0 and and and...
Why can't you just believe OP about what they saw and stop making excuses for a random man touching himself in public?

El0die · 11/07/2019 06:31

Yes @Rumplesmoothskin

Ghanagirl · 11/07/2019 06:35

@Knitclubchatter
WTF

Bezalelle · 11/07/2019 06:41

Yeah, knit. And maybe he had dementia.

Hmm

😂

Getting back to what happened - isn't this one of the behaviours, like voyeurism, that escalates? Always worth reporting for that reason.

lolaflores · 11/07/2019 06:45

He is taking advantage of her embarrassment it that's the power part hes getting off on.
Its public indecency and a step from flashing.

But if it was me, I'd wonder how long it would take the police to respond or how seriously they would take it and then it do anything but feel that 8 should have. That would probably mean he be free to donit again.
I see where the dilemma is

Rachelover40 · 11/07/2019 07:17

Quite, lolaflores (I think....:-) ).

The man probably does it a lot. If a few people report him, the police will look for him and nab him for indecent exposure. At some stage, if he hasn't already, he will almost certainly do it in a place where there is CCTV.

MashedSpud · 11/07/2019 07:22

It’s a shame disgusting individuals like this share our oxygen.

origamiunicorn · 11/07/2019 07:31

You could have reported it for her? Or gone to her aid?

THIS!

Similar happened to me in Paris on the train, guy kept trying to touch me, I kept telling him not to, I moved, he followed, I went to get off the train early at the next stop he followed me and stood behind me whilst I was waiting for the doors to open, kept trying to rub my bum and was making inappropriate noises. It was dark, I was 20 on my own in Paris and scared so I burst into tears. Nobody helped me, everyone stood there letting it happen, avoiding eye contact like I was a crazy person. I ended up getting off the stop after mine and going straight to the guards as he's got off at my stop and I was worried he was going to lie in wait for me.

So yeah, help women, make sure they're ok!

summerofladybird · 11/07/2019 07:33

He must be depressed....or maybe he's a vile person, yes, that'll be it.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 11/07/2019 07:49

IT would have been an awful shame whilst she was struggling with tge big heavy lock, if it slipped and accidentally came in contact with his gonads. Not condoning violence, but accidents happen. I wouldn't like it if the little bird was hurt though.

Proteinshakesandovieshat · 11/07/2019 07:49

You can report it.

There was a man doing the same in leeds the other week. He was staring at the manuquiene in an underwear shop window. I know it's not much better but at least there wasnt a woman feeling horrible and upset.

We were in the bar opposite. Police came and picked him up. They came over and spoke to me, apparantly he does it alot.

That's when it hit me. The poor people who work in there have to put up with this. The officer said it's the first time in a while the public have reported it, rather than shop employees. He had already been banned from coming into the city centre.

The man had a tag on, so likely going back to prison. But if you commit your crime, in the middle of the day, what's the point I having a tag that let's you out during the day? And why didn't the tag know he was where he shouldnt be. I dont really know how tags work, but seems odd that

I think making the employees and the public, going out their business, indirectly take part in your fetish is disgusting.

Everyone should report this stuff when they see it.

user87382294757 · 11/07/2019 07:57

I saw this guy wandering along by the river the other day with all tackle out, a kind of dishcloth over his tummy, very weird, I just ignored this and kept walking as wan;t sure if he was trying to get some attention or something. Not erect just flashing about. Ugh. Wonder what happened with that. Think in that case there was maybe something a bit wrong with him.
