Neighbour has opened bar in garden

Our next door neighbour has recently had a lot of work done on their house. They have, as part of this, built a large shed-like structure in the back garden, which I now realise contains some sort of “bar”.

We get on well with our neighbours and he has invited DH and DS1 over to drink one night this week, but I do not like the fact that so many of his other friends have been coming and going all week so far. Additionally, there have been people out drinking in this bar until the early hours three out of the last four nights.

AIBU to think this is not an appropriate thing to have in the garden of a semi detached house?

I don't know what you can do about it, but it would drive me nuts! I feel for you OP.

It’s new and a novelty....leave it for a bit and see how it goes.

Widgetsframe · 10/07/2019 21:40

I do wonder if you are in Guildford?

Accountant222 · 10/07/2019 21:41

We moved house because of a garden bar right up against our fence, never ending shit music and shouting

Blonde87 · 10/07/2019 21:43

Glad you’re not my neighbour you bore.

AntiHop · 10/07/2019 21:48

I don't know why pp are being so rude.

Op yanbu. They're being noisy into the early hours. That's very inconsiderate. I'd consider asking him to keep it down.

Nanny0gg · 10/07/2019 21:52

Oh they're all out tonight! (has the bar closed?)

Of course it's unreasonable for people to disturb their neighbours nightly, into the early hours.

Monitor it and report to Environment Dept of local council for noise.

MeYouWye · 10/07/2019 21:55

@BloomsButtons was it Mrs Wobble the Waitress?
On a serious note that sounds like an awesome thread, don't suppose you have a link? Smile

ScabbyHorse · 10/07/2019 21:55

@Nanny0gg is right, report it to the council noise people, if it is bothering you at unsociable hours.

FelixFelicis6 · 10/07/2019 21:57

Are you sure the large structure isn't something that needs planning? you could look into that...

LuckyLou7 · 10/07/2019 21:59

It's more the fact your neighbour and his friends and family are creating noise nuisance than the fact he has built a shed and converted it into a bar. He needs to be told how the noise is impacting on you. He can soundproof the shed, it's not a huge expense. His guests need to be advised to leave quietly when they do so.

If he was having noisy late evening parties several times a week, then you'd have more of a problem. As it is, he probably has no idea how much noise you are being exposed to, so tell him, and suggest some resolutions.

If he doesn't react in a reasonable manner, then you have to start keeping a diary of disturbances, inform the council etc etc and it will be a massive headache for all concerned.

Chovihano · 10/07/2019 22:00

I wouldn't be happy about the disturbance and would speak to them about this. However, come Autumn when it gets chilly nobody will be out there.

Rana7 · 10/07/2019 22:10

I’m looking out the window at them now. I have counter 14 people come and go from this “bar” so far this evening. Half of them are out “smoking” in the garden. That’s hardly having a few friends around for a quiet drink.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 10/07/2019 22:19

Tell him directly to keep the noise down after 11pm or you will be lobbing water bombs over and you'll have a Bacardi and Coke please.

WorraLiberty · 10/07/2019 22:20

Is "smoking" different to smoking?

Serious question btw. Are you saying they're smoking dope?

Either way, what did he say when you mentioned the noise?

Notcontent · 10/07/2019 22:23

That sounds like a nightmare.

To the people who say the OP just needs to put up with it - I guess you and your family must be aliens from a different planet that don’t need sleep!!

Hollyhobbi · 10/07/2019 22:31

Do any of these friends have jobs? Doesn't sound like it!

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 10/07/2019 22:34

Are you in Shrewsbury @Rana7 ? I went to a wedding recently and saw some friends who I've not seen for about 10 years. They live in Shrewsbury and were telling me about a bar they'd recently turned their shed into!

thenightsky · 10/07/2019 22:35

Do these people have no work to attend to tomorrow?

ChicCroissant · 10/07/2019 22:40

This is a trend at the moment, those bar sheds - not a good look IMO, but yes the noise is annoying. The novelty (for them) will wear off though.

AriadneesWeb · 10/07/2019 22:44

Report to the council. He probably needs planning permission. And if not they can still pursue a noise and anti social behaviour complaint.

ChippingInLowCarbing · 10/07/2019 22:46

Yes YABU Margo People can have alcohol and a couple of fridges in a garden shed if they want to

Your drip drip of noise is a different issue
