Aibu to think it doesn’t matter? Carpet measuring

So if we have a room that’s 5m wide and 4m long, can we buy a 4m wide and 5m long carpet and just have it turned around (if that makes sense?) so that width becomes length.
Boyfriend says no, I say I can. Who is right?

Are you also needing some tartan paint?

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 10/07/2019 16:33

Are you sure your room isn't 4m wide and 5m long? :)

steppemum · 10/07/2019 16:34

I just laughed at the question.

really, of course you can.
Can he not see that you can describe a room either way? So you could say it is 5m long x 4 m wide, or you could say it is 5m wide x 4 m long
IT IS THE SAME THING.

The only possible difference is if you buy a striped carpet, and it would effect which way the stipes went!

PickAChew · 10/07/2019 16:34

If it's plain then so long as you're not matching the pile to existing identical carpet, it can go either way. If it's striped, then you may find that the stripes look better one way rather than the other.

But if course you can buy a 4m length of 5m carpet!

PancakeAndKeith · 10/07/2019 16:36

Can you get him to explain why it wouldn’t work!

AngrySquid · 10/07/2019 16:36

No, DC3Dilemma, I’m afraid I don’t get the joke, surely you can’t get tartan paint only wallpaper? Grin 😂😂😂

The exact measurements is 5.7m x 3.9 (so would probably get 6m by 4m) but I just wanted to canvass opinions, I’m pretty sure BF is being ridiculous and I can just turn the carpet sideways if needed? 🤔 he’s insistent that I can’t Grin so we’ve put it to MN.

OP posts:
AngrySquid · 10/07/2019 16:37

He cannot explain why it won’t work, only that it just won’t.
Plain cord, no pattern, nothing to match etc. That’s not an issue,
I’m glad I’m not missing something obvious, I was a bit worried for a minute!! Grin

Musicalmistress · 10/07/2019 16:38

Only way it might be an issue is if there’s a pattern & you want it to run a certain way. Other than that I can’t see that it makes one iota of a difference.

Chovihano · 10/07/2019 16:38

The carpet fitter will be able to tell you how much carpet you need, if it will stretch etc. Just ask them.

AngrySquid · 10/07/2019 16:40

A relative is fitting it, but we’re still just discussing ideas as we’re buying some new furniture as well when measurements came up (he was incensed that most measurements are only 4m x whatever and I told him it doesn’t matter) and well, here we are! Blush thank you though, mumsnet!

AngrySquid · 10/07/2019 16:40

Will definitely have solid measurements before we buy anything though haha 😂

I’m embarrassed for him. Blush

SayWhatSayNot · 10/07/2019 16:42

Yes you can.

If it's more than 5m long, the 4m wide carpet is the better and more economical option. To make carpet from a 5m wide roll fit a room 5.7m long, you would either have a lot of waste or have to lay the 0.7m with the nap in a different direction to the rest. Either way, you would have an avoidable seam.

melissasummerfield · 10/07/2019 16:47

@flouncyfanny don't you mean a long weight Grin

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 10/07/2019 16:47

Do t you have to add on a bit to both dimensions to allow for grippers and the like?

I've always had carpet shops do it tbf, it looks like it's a job that's more complex than it appears.

IncandescentShadow · 10/07/2019 16:53

You might have to cut out shapes for him to show him...

I've had this sort of thing from DH at times. He's an engineer. For a long time he insisted that you couldn't get wifi through the mobile phone network. Apparently, it was impossible...

Sorry but your BF is an absolute tit.

It's plain cord FFS. What the bloody hell difference does it make...none.

I've measured up, purchased and layed over 50 carpets in my time and I've never heard the like of it.

Does he think rugs can only go down in one direction too.

The mind boggles.

MillicentMartha · 10/07/2019 17:04

No, no, it’s a long stand you’re after, next to the sky hooks.

RubberTreePlant · 10/07/2019 17:15

Just turn 90degrees to your left and remeasure Wink

Ciderandskatesdontmix · 10/07/2019 20:45

Tell him he'll need some skirting board ladders to measure it up properly, make sure you're stocked up on spirit level bubbles whilst you're at it Wink
