AWBU to have bought 2 chairs?

I mean we've done it now but a couple of people have looked a bit Hmm when I mentioned it.

We've had a corner sofa for ages, only DH and I at home, very rarely have visitors so old sofa is just uncomfortable. Went looking for something new but totally grudged the ££££ for something larger than 2 seats when it is only us 95% of the time. So we've bought 2 recliner chairs.

We also have a dining table with chairs in the living room and have an ikea rocking chair we can bring down for if/when we have visitors.

So AWBU to just think of ourselves and our own comfort and save ourselves a few hundred in the process?

You have what you want, recliners are a bit 'old peopley' - we have an electric one Grin I hate the thing, as I say it just screams OLD but DH needs it

TheyCallMeMellowYellow · 10/07/2019 09:50

Grin I'm totally picturing you both as joey and chandler

TulipsTwoLips · 10/07/2019 09:50

No U at all! My uncle and aunt swapped their sofa for chairs a long time ago and it has suited them very well.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/07/2019 09:53

It's definitely 'old peoply' - not the recliners, but the two chairs thing.

My granny/grumps had 2 chairs facing the fire in the room next to the kitchen.

And a front room with a sofa in 'for best'. The front parlour was only ever used for visitors.

Dh and I also used to do the two chairs thing until children came and we had a sofa. Even though the children have gone the dog needs a sofa spot.

I can see us going to two recliners when this sofa dies.

cocomelon23 · 10/07/2019 09:53

Do you not like sitting together? I love snuggling up with dp on the sofa in the evenings. I would hate to be sat apart. It also reminds me of old people. Pil have a reclining chair each.

summerofladybird · 10/07/2019 09:57

A sofa is the best thing to sprawl on in the evenings when watching TV. We have a sofa and three chairs but the chairs are rarely used.

IncrediblySadToo · 10/07/2019 10:02

YANBU to do what suits you in your house

Now if you were asking what we thought of recliners I’d be saying - they’re comfirtsbke, but unless you’re disabled or elderly and need one then they’re a hideous choice

Personally I like being tigethrr on the sofa, but if you don’t then that’s your choice. I also like to have comfirtsbke seating for visitors, but if you don’t invite people over then they’re s but surplus to requirement aren’t they. But even if I lived alone and never had visitors I’d want a sofa to stretch out on!

Travis1 · 10/07/2019 10:07

@TheyCallMeMellowYellow ha ha I hadn't even thought of that. Will have to get DH to have a western style comp now!!

@cocomelon23 I love the man but he's a bloody furnace! I end up squished up in one corner and he's on me at one end, the cats across my chest and the other cat is draped over his legs. Every other member of the household is comfy apart from me. So he now doesn't do that and gets his hair playing and snuggling in bed Grin

See I don't sprawl, most I do is pop one leg under me and these chairs are big enough for that. I probably will use it as a chair for the majority of the time rather than the recliner.

Think it's safe to say we're old before our time then Wink

Not at all - buy what suits you best.

The only thing I'd say is that, if you do have visitors, it would be polite for you and DH to offer them the comfortable chairs and take the kitchen chairs yourselves.

notso · 10/07/2019 10:10

I'd be Hmm too if someone I knew did this.
Nothing to do with guests, everything to do with recliners!
Your home, your choice though obviously.

Travis1 · 10/07/2019 10:17

Oh yes @ScreamingValenta will definitely do that. TBH it's kind of what happens now anyway, although the corner sofa is technically a 4/5 seater I find it uncomfortable if people are in so tend to leave them on the sofa and sit on one of the dining chairs. Plus I find the logistics of a conversation on a corner sofa a bit difficult. That again might just be a bit of a personal thing.

I also didn't realise there was such a hatred for recliners in the world Shock Wink

Do what you like, it's your home. We have no sofas/chairs in our lounge we have floor cushions and beanbags because it's comfy for us.

Cookit · 10/07/2019 10:35

Of course you’re not BU - your money, your house etc. BUT yes I do think it’s the kind of thing only 70+ year olds generally do. Thinking of Leon and June in Gogglebox.

ChicCroissant · 10/07/2019 10:37

My DD loves our recliners, we bought a sofa and chair in the sale (bit of an impulse buy). Imagine Chandler and Joey but at either end of a sofa Grin

Nesssie · 10/07/2019 10:40

I love recliners. I can't sit on a sofa or chair without it being reclined, so uncomfy!

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 10/07/2019 10:44

We only have one 3 seater and theres 3 of us! We'll prob change this as ds gets older but for now it works

SerenDippitty · 10/07/2019 10:47

We have two sofas and no chairs. There’s on,y two of us but sometimes it’s nice to have one each.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 10/07/2019 11:00

We have the best of both worlds - recliner sofas. Husband and share a two seater with one dog, the kids and other dogs share the three seater. Win/win

SerenDippitty · 10/07/2019 11:04

Yes one of our sofas is a recliner too. 😃

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/07/2019 11:07

I had a lovely Gplan recliner OP after 1 was recalled and the second was faulty we sent it back. I miss it every day.

Travis1 · 10/07/2019 11:31

@RezCowgirl that sounds amazing!

Good for you - Enjoy them.

We have recliners, absolute love them - that is my one thing I miss when holidaying my recliners 💞

historysock · 10/07/2019 14:15

My parents have two recliner chairs and what cannot in any way be described as a two seater sofas (it's the most uncomfortable thing known to man). Fine when it's just them, super annoying when we go round as there is no where for us to sit.

Depends how often you have visitors I guess .
