... to be peed off with GP who recommended I use expensive potions but didn't write me a prescription?

Went to see the GP about some dry patches my 4 month DS has on his skin. He recommended I use E45 cream liberally on the baby every night and only wash him in E45 bath oil. The cream costs £10 for 500g and the bath oil costs £4.50. I just agreed and walked out but now I'm feeling aggrieved that he didn't write me a prescription so that I could get the stuff free. Do GPs have to pay if they write you a prescription or something?

Is it unreasonable for me to have expected him to write me one so that I don't have to pay?

My GP won't prescribe stuff like oilatum etc.

I bought mine off ebay, much much cheaper, but not sure where they get it from.....

I don't think you're being unreasonable but try not to be too p*ssed off with your GP - he / she might well have meant to write you a prescription and forgot. If you're seeing your health visitor next week I would ask her to write it for you or else phone the surgery and explain you didn't realise how expensive the stuff is and could they possibly write you a prescription to pick up. Sure you won't have any problems at all with this.

I get Aveeno on prescription for DS1.

If the prescription was for a few patches of dry skin, then I think it's reasonable to ask you to buy the necessary potions yourself.

If your ds were diagnosed with some form of dermatitis requiring a regime of creams and potions then your gp should write you a prescription, imo.

Depends a lot on the gp and pct, I guess.

Fox, that's terrible but sadly not surprising. Grrr.
