Have these Ambassador emails been released by the US and not the UK
Civil Service? Is this a way of booting out the current Trump despiser and getting someone more sympathetic to the Golden Toddler?

Possibly

longwayoff · 10/07/2019 13:09

Indeed, and off he goes. What will they inflict on us now? New ambassador Mark Francois? Aaron Banks? Tommy Robinson would suit. Farage too busy wrecking the UK to take it on. The Baby would like to choose. I dont think he understands it's not like USA where you just buy and bribe your way to becoming ambassador, enough donations, the job is yours. I wonder if Liam Fox bought his wife a nice necklace from Ivanka at their 'trade meeting'?

longwayoff · 10/07/2019 13:14

Or maybe Liam Gallagher? That could workGrin

How could the US have released the emails?

familycourtq · 10/07/2019 13:18

I dont think he understands it's not like USA where you just buy and bribe your way to becoming ambassador, hmmmm are you sure?

MyOpinionIsValid · 10/07/2019 13:21

The emails were presumably secure between the Ambassador and the FCO. Therefore there is a leak. Ambassadors are appointed by The Court of St James.

Saucy99 · 10/07/2019 13:22

Impossible for the Americans to have leaked it. These would have been for FCO eyes only.

IncandescentShadow · 10/07/2019 13:25

Doubt it. Teresa May is leaving soon and a few things have happened which seem to be as a result of her and her inner team not having to be around to take the flack.

An ambassador's role includes being able to build a rapport with the administration of the country they are in, whatever their personal [and it has to be said, not particularly constructive or fact-filled] thoughts may be.

Vibiano · 10/07/2019 13:50

Nope, it's a ploy but not for the purpose of getting rid of our ambassador. That's just a fortunate side effect.
It's to put a wedge between us and them. Then we're nicely isolated from both EU and USA

longwayoff · 10/07/2019 14:06

@vibiano, yes, booting UK into grovel mode, having waved goodbye to EU, it will be only the US that can save us. At a price. Now, where did I put my NHS? it was here just now.

I think Trump knew that if he made a big enough fuss the Ambassador would walk as his position wasn't tenable anymore and low and behold .. No way Trump would allow anyone to talk about him like that and get away with it.

redredrobins · 10/07/2019 14:15

The US could not have leaked the messages, they are confidential between embassy and foreign office. The civil servant or politician who leaked has broken the official secrets act and needs to be found and the book thrown at them. It is a very dangerous position for a country to not be able to trust that diplomatic communications are secure.
An ambassador has to be able to report truthfully about the country to which he is appointed, and does anybody think his description of the Trump white house was inaccurate.

crosspelican · 10/07/2019 14:17

No - I think it was a ploy to discredit Jeremy Hunt's PM campaign. Hunt is Darroch's boss.

redredrobins · 10/07/2019 14:33

If it was a ploy to undermine either candidate it is very wrong, but I think it could be much worse than that, and intended to cause the UK's reputation to be diminished.
The official secrets act is of paramount importance and the consequence of leaking information covered by it can not be over emphasised.
My DH is retired from the British military and at times I would ask a seemingly innocent question about his work, he had a "look" that he would use that meant he couldn't answer because of security implications , so I knew I could not expect an answer. There are still things he can't tell me, even though he retired over 20 years ago.
The person who leaked should be found, tried and locked up for a very long time!

Vibiano · 10/07/2019 14:38

Boris has a bad track record when it comes to keeping schtum.

Triathlon989 · 10/07/2019 14:42

Trump is an unpleasant, insecure bully - as Darroch correctly judged.

The reaction of Boris Johnson in last nights debate was craven and cowardly. We really are becoming a vassal state.

Our institutions are being slowly eroded. The only person showing any dignity in all this is Kim Darroch.

PotolBabu · 10/07/2019 14:48

That was the first act of BoJo as ‘PM.’ Darroch knew when BoJo didn’t come out unequivocally in his favour that his time was numbered. And he is too senior to be humiliated.
I am a historian. I study FCO files from the 1950s-1960s on a daily basis for my academic work. They are full of hilarious and frank insights. They are meant to be honest.

Triathlon989 · 10/07/2019 14:56

Pity we cannot see the US Ambassadors frank assessments of
May
Johnson
Corbyn
and the rest of the dysfunctional shower running, or aspiring to run, the UK.

PotolBabu · 10/07/2019 15:02

You will be able to, in a few decades when they are available in the archives.
