To think newer kindle screens are tiny!

Have I become really old? I haven't had a Kindle in years but I'm buying one for a holiday. it arrived and I couldn't believe how small the screen was...I guess I'll get used to it...?

I thought the screens were all more or less the same size. We've had a few kindles over the years. DP has one of the new waterproof paperwhites and I don't think it is significantly smaller in the screen than my original keyboard one.

The kindles that are solely for reading are around the same size they have always been. Kindle fires are definitely a lot narrower than they used to be though

It's weird, I got it and thought it was the size of a postage stamp. But maybe I'm wrong!

I agree! I broke my old one ages ago and only just bought one of the new 2019 editions. I knew it was going to be small -and it is Compared to the standard size of an old one.

Having said that it will fit in my handbag much better now.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 08/07/2019 08:25

They’re a bit smaller. I have mine in the case I bought for theprevious one and it’s a bit loose.

Thelowquietsea · 08/07/2019 08:50

Can you still read it ok? It doesn't compromise the reading?

You know you can increase the font size, right?

GruciusMalfoy · 08/07/2019 09:08

I have the Paperwhite model one older than the brand new one. It's neat, but reading on it is fine. I prefer something smaller like this, your hands don't get as tired.

Thelowquietsea · 08/07/2019 09:28

I do know you can increase the font size, but I find reading something with just a few words on the page really odd!

Have you tried resetting the margins? You can have the text go almost all the way to the edge of the screen, but there is a much narrower option.

I fucking HATE the new design.

The ideal version was the one without the keyboard, but WITH. THE. BUTTONS.

I hate having to tap the screen and touch and swipe. The side buttons were intuitive, and the same with both hands. Now you have to arch your thumb over the 'back' section of the page, or even in the other hand it's a much bigger motion than twitching your thumb to go a page on.

Plus these changes have made the device thicker!

The only advantage is searching, but got around that by just buying all books on my phone, then syncing the device.

I've had my current Kindle for I think 8ish years and I love it, but I think it's on it's way out. I was looking at the new ones and cannot understand why they don't have side buttons anymore?! That's the greatest thing about them! Now I have to swipe? Which isn't hard of course but makes the way I have to hold it and read completely different!

thecatsthecats · 08/07/2019 14:22

It's worse than just swiping. If you're holding it in your left hand, on the old edition, you have to just squeeze the button.

Now, there is a section of the screen that you tap to go back a page, a section at the top for settings, and the rest for forward. Meaning the way you hold it is dependent on what you want to do in the way the old one wasn't!

I'd genuinely recommend finding a reconditioned older model. The new design is pants.

I had an old button model for 7 years, then had to get a Paperwhite. I've had to buy a "Paperwhite For Newbies" book, as I couldn't make head or tail of it. There were no clear directions with it.
