Anyone else had a very hungry baby?

My 9 week old baby DS is drinking milk like it's going out of fashion!

Finished 6oz @ 2, 7oz @ 5:30 and now just had another 5 after wailing the house down.

He was 11lb 11oz when i got him weighed on Thursday. Is this "normal"?

My son was exactly the same. I was so worried about over feeding him and making him ill. I spoke to my HV and she said not to worry, they ever only eat what they need. My son is a greedy baby, but he's thriving! Maybe your DS is having a growth spurt?

Siennabear · 06/07/2019 20:50

Hes feeding every few hours which is fine. Are you feeding on demand?

It does sound a lot of milk though. Are you pace feeding him? Look up on you tube but basically letting baby have a break between drinking the milk so they can digest it rather than gulping it all down in one go.

mumtoaw · 06/07/2019 20:51

@GoosetheCat Possibly! That would explain it. He's only been like this the past couple of days.

@Siennabear Yes, we have to give him breaks in between. He's a very windy baby

My LO is only ten days old but he's been cluster feeding like a demon the past few days (always between 1-5am which is super exhausting as me and the OH are still trying to catch up on sleep we lost while I was in labour) which was slightly alarming but everyone I've spoken to (ie midwives etc) have said it's normal - ESPECIALLY while it's been hot, they need the fluid intake as much as us. So I feel you 😩

mumtoaw · 06/07/2019 20:53

He's been so fussy and grumpy today too Sad

Yes! However he was very small at birth, and quadrupled his weight in the first three months. He would feed at least once an hour as a newborn, and continuously from 8/9pm-2am every night. He was an absolute chunk before he got moving. He's now an extremely healthy and slim 16 month old! I think some babies are just like that.

Parrakeet · 06/07/2019 21:01

I was feeding 24/7 and should've owned a cow til he was about 6. Perfectly normal!

userabcname · 06/07/2019 21:02

My son fed constantly until about 12w - bf though so don't know exact quantities. I do know he was born on the 75th centile and by 6 w was 12lbs 12oz and on the 91st. Some babies are just hungry- he did calm down and now he's a toddler he's basically back on the 75th centile again.

Look at the daily amount rather than specific feeds, they “need” between 750 - 900ml a day on average. Mine has well in excess of the average though, but is only just following her percentile. And she will feed 2 hours apart. Growth spurts and hot weather also impact feeding x

I had two like that. My 16m old has three bottles before bed even now.

They were both on 7oz 3 hourly by 12 weeks.

Just leave them to it.

TabbyMumz · 06/07/2019 21:33

I would expect a six week old baby to have 6 or 7 oz every 3 to 4 hours.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 06/07/2019 21:38

My little boy was like this. Constantly feeding, be it breastmilk or formula. He's not much different with normal food at 2 😂 he eats more than me for breakfast. That said, he's 'solid' and tall but definitely not fat and very active so burns it off!

My daughter is 6 weeks old and goes through phases. She's currently like a bottomless pit so think she's going through a growth spurt.

Are you feeding on demand? Is he generally following the centile line? I generally believe babies/children control there own appetites and from what I gather, mostly take what they need. If they eat too much, they'll bring it back up.

Anoying22 · 06/07/2019 22:22

My son was the same!! He ate so much and so fast he shot up to 98th percentile for weight, where he stayed til he started moving around! He still eats and eats and eats at 300 miles an hour! But he's now skinny as a rake as he also runs around at 300 miles an hour too!! His brother was laid back with feeding, and is laid back at everything else now too. They r all different! I wouldn't worry :)

Mycatwontstopstaring · 06/07/2019 22:31

It’s possible he’s just going to be tall. I know two children who the health visitors kept saying were overweight (v upsetting got th mums) and when the children reached age two they suddenly stretched out and became incredibly tall. At which point everyone remembered they have uncles who are also really tall.

Wynston · 06/07/2019 22:49

I had 2 very hungry babies.......when they cried i fed them-some people would make comment about how i should be feeding every 4hours (i would never make a baby wait for milk??!!)
When they were about 12 weeks i tried the hungry formula (very gradual-1 feed a day.)
They are still milk monsters now 3 and 7.
Sounds normal to me.
