should I change my hairdresser?

I get on well with my hairdresser and we have a laugh but the last two occasions have left me disappointed.

I booked an appointment and turned up on the date and time and the hairdresser looked at me and said can I help you? I said I have come for my appointment. He said we do not have you down for today are you sure you have the right day? I said yes but maybe its for next week so he checked their book and said we do not have you down for next week either but we can book you in for next week so I said ok. It transpired that the girl who booked my appointment did not put it in their diary so the space was free and they put someone else in my place. I was quite annoyed because although it did not matter as such, it could have been a case of I was having my hair done for a special occasion that day or the next day only to be told there was no appointment. I would have thought under the circumstances they could have given me some compensation for the mix up like a bit off the price of the hair cut because I had to go back the following week and I could have been going somewhere. When I saw the hairdresser and explained that I actually did have an appointment the previous week all he said was sorry. I think the least he could have done was charged me a bit less. Also he said to me how much should I take off when I cut your hair so I said a little more than one inch so he said you want it just touching the shoulders and I said ok. He cut it but it seemed as if he was cutting the back shorter than the sides like a graduated bob but I did not say anything. He never shows me the back with a mirror so I asked why and he said someone stole the mirror. Fair enough but how much does a mirror cost? I have never been to any hair salon where they do not take a mirror and show you what the back of your head looks like so when I go to get my hair done I can never see the back only the front and sides and I can assure you if he had shown me the back I would have said but the back is shorter etc. I went to another stylist to have a chat and she confirmed what I already suspected that the back is shorter than the sides and so if I do not like graduated bobs which I dont then I will have to grow the back out. I also said my hair does not look layered enough and she said well he has put some long layers in and then I said I have been told that short layers cannot go with my hair etc and she said to me it is your hair you can have anything you want so I said but I am not a stylist and I appreciate the expertise of the stylist telling me what is best for instance you should chose a style that is right for your hair type and face shape and cannot just have what you want and a good stylist would not do just anything. Any ideas? If I stick with my original stylist I will have to make sure I explain exactly what I want and he makes no mistakes or gives me something else. He cut it too short for a start but my hair grows quickly so in a month it will have grown out and then the shorter back can be made level to the rest of the hair

Yes. You should change your hairdresser.
Honestly I’m slightly surprised you need to ask!

Lily715 · 06/07/2019 15:54

If you're unhappy with your hairdresser then change your hairdresser? It's not that hard?

ilovesooty · 06/07/2019 15:54

If you're not happy you need to be more assertive at the time. Your post is full of what you think should happened but you said nothing.

Of course you can take your custom elsewhere.

MoreSlidingDoors · 06/07/2019 15:58

Goodness me. How do you deal with real problems, OP?!

NotRamona · 06/07/2019 16:15

I do think you should get a new hairdresser but I also think you sound like hard work OP

Flute56 · 06/07/2019 16:37

I am not hard work. I just want to look nice like any woman does

Why on earth would you want compensation for the mix up? Mix ups happen!

RogerBannister · 06/07/2019 16:58

If it wasn’t written in the diary how do you know for certain the error was theirs and not yours?

recklessruby · 06/07/2019 17:09

Yes change hairdresser. The bit with the mirror's dodgy. Surely they have other mirrors? It sounds like he knew he had cut it too short and didnt want you to see it!

mussolini9 · 06/07/2019 17:25

He cut it but it seemed as if he was cutting the back shorter than the sides like a graduated bob but I did not say anything

You should definitely change hairdressers.
But also maybe read up about or go on a womens' assertiveness training course. Otherwise, you are going to end up in exactly the same place with Hairdresser 2.

How rude

Yes go somewhere new

RubyWho · 06/07/2019 19:00

I used to go to a semi famous salon, ie semi famous for the type of hair styles they did which was fairly niche. They were quite expensive but whatever. First time I went - great, couldn’t fault them. Second time- meh. Third time, they’d clearly forgotten I was coming in because when I turned up my hair stylist was having her own hair done. They rushed through my appointment meaning it was a really terrible cut (appointment was for an hour, I was waiting for thirty mins of that for my stylist to finish having her own hair done, then they rushed through it so much that they didn’t even do the front of it). It should have cost £60 and I was so angry that I refused to pay the full price.

Anyway. I never went back. No regrets.

sneakypinky · 06/07/2019 19:01

Oh I know, if you want compensation you should get the local rag to come out and take some photos of you doing a sad face and write an article about it. That'll show 'em.

StockholmSue · 06/07/2019 19:04

Is this the same hairdresser you were having problems with a few months ago? They don’t sound very good.

Flute56 · 06/07/2019 20:15

no it is not the same hairdresser. Anyway ive seen people with really botched up haircuts so mine is not that bad and I can tie it back to disguise the shorter back until it grows
