I'm 46 and my hair is definitely thinning significantly round the temples and hairline - there is less of it, and what there is is thinner and wispier than before. I'm having checks with the GP for menopause/perimenopause, but I wondered whether the Alpecin/Plantur 39 things were worth a try.... What do you guys thing? I was going to get some today but they're A TENNER a bottle, which stopped me for today.

My sister is early 30s with female pattern baldness, so very thin hair over the top and front of her head. She swears by alpecin and you really can see the difference.

Another vote for £ shop caffeine shampoo here. I get mine from Home Bargains for 89p, it's called 'Triple Eight'. I've seen it in Tesco too, on the aisle where they keep all the £1 specials.

I bought the Regaine. Little spray thing. Couldn't bear the smell...

When I wanted to grow out my pixie cut I used Alpecin - I’m sure it was only a fiver from Tesco. It really did work for me.

The Plantur had a colour one which I am trying, seems to add o bit of tone to any grey hairs, not sure on how good it is but gets good reviews. i will see when have used it more.

There is published research to show that topical caffeine increases hair growth, but I don’t know if the shampoos actually contain enough for it to work.

I use alpecin, massage it into my scalp, then leave it on whilst I wash / shave everything else. I figure that should give me the biggest dose of caffeine. My hair has grown a lot, but I don’t know how much it would have grown without it.

I take Sea Kelp tablets, just cheap ones from H&B. My hairdresser went on maternity leave just after I started taking them, at my first appointment after she came back she commented on how much thicker my (ultra-fine) hair was. I hadn't mentioned the Sea Kelp to her and hadn't changed my shampoo or anything else.
