To be more nervous than DS

I'm sitting in the waiting room outside DS's Grade 1 cello exam and I'm so nervous I can't sit still.

DS is in there at the moment and I'm bricking it

Haha been there, Yanbu.

My daughters have both done several music exams, from the same waiting room and in the same church I did my own exams in 20 years ago. Every single time I walk in i get cold sweats, whilst they happily chatter about lunch and school etc. Doesn’t help that the waiting room hasn’t been redecorated since I was a kid.
I’m thankful they’re both so calm and relaxed, which reflects in their results, but god I think my
Blood pressure is through the roof.

Oh good luck to your DS! I know the feeling. Was sick in a carrier bag waiting for DD to come out of her 11+, the glamour! Well done on letting him play the cello too. I forced DD to play a portable instrument as I remember how heavy it was carting a tenor horn to and from school Smile

It's grade 1. It's really not that big a deal. Try to relax and definitely don't make him think it's a huge deal how he does.

I feel the same when DD sits ballet exams. Luckily she isn't bothered, takes it all in her stride.

Paintingtheroseswhite · 04/07/2019 17:31

Thanks all, I was a wreck but did my best not to show it and we've said if he doesn't pass it's no big deal.

Drawing all sorts of inferences from a conversation with his music teacher afterwards, he might not have passed.

How hard is it to pass Grade 1? He's only 8

Ds took his grade 1 piano at just turned 7. He did pass, his teacher at the time thought he was at merit level but on the day is was more of a solid pass. He went on to pass his grade one theory then didn't do any more exams. He had the aptitude and ability to do well with the piano but gave up playing when he was 10.

Hope your Ds gets the result he wants.

My dad did grade 1 cello earlier this year - she got a high merit and I thought bits of it still sounded a bit iffy on the run up! I’m sure he will be fine - at this stage they just want them to love it, failing children at grade 1 is utterly counterintuitive.

DD not dad!! Grin
