Abusive ex and his old phone....

Recently left an abusive marriage. I needed to replace a mobile, and I remembered we had his old phone in the cupboard with a smashed screen, so I went to see if I could get it fixed.

Now it's working again, and I actually know the password after guessing a few. I was just planning to wipe it and log in myself, but now am tempted...

I don't have his new address so can't file for divorce.

What if I logged the phone into my WiFi? I might be able to see an email with his new address. I might see some of his other plans (he has been hassling us from time to time, but has mostly gone quiet).

He is in IT. He will probably notice his email account being accessed by an old device. This is a bad idea, right? Don't kick the hornet's nest, etc.

No! Don't do this. It will open you up to all sorts of potential criticism. Accessing his email is a very bad idea!

Could he potentially track you down by you logging onto it?

I’m sure a solicitor could find him, I didn’t know the address of the other woman for my divorce but my solicitor assured me they could find her if I wanted. I chose not to.

It's an offence to do this, so that's another good reason to leave it be.

I would let it be, don't give him reason to turn it around and make you the snooping bad guy. Could you sell it instead and use the money to do something nice?

I've wiped it. I'm going to use it for myself because DD needs a replacement phone and she can now have mine. (she couldn't face using his, but I'm fine with it)
