Therapur Act Gel Response 3200 - Dreams or Nightmares?

JazzAngel · 25/06/2019 13:10

Hi,

We’re in dire need of a decent kingsize mattress - currently on a kingsize bedframe with an old double mattress (much shin-bashing on corners of frame) and I have various things wrong with me that makes me like the Princess and the Pea. Mattress isn’t brilliant, we have two horrible sweaty memory foam toppers on it to make it bearable, but even in winter, I chuck all the covers off and wake up clammy from being a sweaty betty.

Decided to bite the bullet, gritted teeth, girded loins, and trekked off to our local Dreams and went through the Sleep Machine gizmo, which said I needed what I’d already semi-decided on, a pocket sprung medium mattress.

The only ones I lay on that made me go, “Oooohhh...”, like when Monica went to the Mattress King in Friends, were pillow-top Therapur ones, and the Acti Gel pillow tops were fab and cool on my skin, which is obviously appealing.

After talking to the salesman, who to be fair wasn’t pushing anything other than cappuccinos on me, I’d decided, pretty much, on waiting for the next clearance for one of these £1199-but-will-be-about £600 in the clearance.

Partner could sleep on a washing line on a brick, doesn’t care what we get.

Came home and did some research, and saw on here a ton of Crap Customer Service reviews, and a few about the Therapurs being rubbish. One said theirs basically collapsed after three days, but they didn’t say specifically which model it was (800, 2000, 3000, 3200 springs) and I’m not sure it was an Acti Gel top, or a memory foam top, or the latex top (which they didn’t have in store so I couldn’t try one).

I’ve also seen some other reviews say the Therapur mattresses don’t last five minutes, and that even with a mattress inspector from Dreams coming out and establishing a 3cm sag, there was no replacement or refund, just Dreams’ claim that 3cm sag was within expected limits.

Plus, I also don’t know if replacements etc are included if you get something on Sale...

So, I’m hoping someone on here can help me understand if I’m going to be making a humongously expensive mistake if I hold out for one of these and stick it on a card, or if they really are as great as they felt in store.

Can anyone help me, please?

Can’t comment on that one but I recommend having a browse on mattressman.co.uk for what you want. We got ours from there and it’s wonderful.

Thanks. What did you get?

Hi @JazzAngel

Just stumbled across your post as I also saw the same bed in store (3200) and thought it was amazing. I am split between this bed and the Casper Hybrid.

Did you go for the bed in the end? Thanks

Hi,

No, we went for an Italian latex mattress for £395 inc delivery via Amazon in the end. The company do a soft and a medium, and I got the soft, which is still pretty firm - I have fibro, so I’m like the Princess and the Pea! The soft one has an aloe-vera cover, the medium has an antibacterial silver cover. They zip off “for ease of washing”, though like every other mattress cover, it would still be a royal pain to get it off and on again because they aren’t baggy, for obv reasons.

It’s great, really comfortable, and guaranteed for 20 years. It’s part natural latex and part synthetic (the 100% natural latex crumbles after a while, so they need synthetic latex to add durability and lack of crumbliness). An awful lot cheaper than Dunlopillo.

I suddenly realised that the only good night’s sleep I can remember having in the last 15 years or so has been either on my mother’s latex mattress, or hospital mattresses, which are also latex.

Was completely put off Dreams and Therapur after reading reviews about them sagging after a month or so, and Dreams dismissing it as normal. The salesman who was supposed to phone me when he got back from holiday, having served me in the store and wanting to see what I’d decided on in the end (he was still in line for the commission) didn’t call after all, and if they can’t be arsed with you before they’ve got your £s, it makes me think they’d bother even less after the event.

You know where you are with a latex mattress. No springs to wear out or break, they don’t sag, and they’re naturally repellent to dust mites, too.

Hope that helps. I can dig out the name of the company if you like, have forgotten it atm! X

Hi @JazzAngel,
My partner and i were about to buy the same mattress from Dreams but i wanted to sleep on it and do some research before paying out over 2k for a superking. I was diagnosed with fibro last year too 😢. I would really like to have the name of the latex mattress you bought. Im currently using a latex pillo which is 20+ years and one om my mums but i cant find one that is half as good, they are all too hard. I did try the therapur cloud pillow in dreams and that seemed amazing but reluctant to spend £100 on a single pillow i am not able to try.

I would be really grateful for your thoughts and any advice you may be able to offer please.

Best wishes.

Hi T,

It’s Marcapiuma, Sevenlife, the softest they do. Here’s the Amazon link, but it’s come up v long, so no idea if it’ll work or not:

www.amazon.co.uk/Marcapiuma-Mattress-SEVENLIFE-Orthopaedic-Removable/dp/B01CHZPFVO/ref=sr_1_4_sspa?psc=1&keywords=Latex+mattress&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzVDVCVENPQ0dEOVVBJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjAxNDIwMUc5MFc3NUlIN1dHWCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNTA4NzAzMk5RVFRSUkJLUFFSRiZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1573068969&sr=8-4-spons

I got one of their pillows, too, which was £40, and it’s way too hard for my fibro neck :( I use it as a back support when I’m sitting up in bed. What was the £100 pillow like? - still haven’t found my way round Mumsnet yet, and your message has disappeared while I’m writing this. ‘Tain’t like texting!

If you email me on JigsawNaturalHealth at g mail dot com, I can give you some (free!) help with your fibro. I’ve been managing mine since I was 3, and have more than average medical knowledge on this subject, working with natural medicine.

In any event, let me know if you get this latex mattress, and how you get on with it. I think you’re v wise to steer clear of the Therapur...the customer reviews are shocking. I thought it was amazing when I tried it, and maybe if it had been cheaper (a LOT cheaper!) I might have got it. I get really hot in bed, and the Therapur seemed the answer. However, I’m nowhere near as hot on the latex one as I was on our old spring mattress with x2 memory foam toppers. That was ridiculous.

Good luck!

Thanks for writing your review about Therapur mattress. I bought this in June 2021 and the sides have popped out on both sides. Strange how we all have fibromyalgia and suffer with sleeping problems. I have a homeserve engineer Coming out today. I turn the mattress, with help asnits quiet heavy, and have only slept on it for 3 months. I wa staying g with friends for one. I will hopefully get a refund or at least a change. I don't fine the bed cooling at all in the night, even with all the bedding to help keep cool.
