To ask if someone can look up your Mumsnet username if they have your email address

Can MNHQ or anyone else in the know please answer this question. I'm asking because someone I know in real life said that any of your email contacts can potentially enter your email into some sort of search possibly using an app and this will bring up all the forums / social media you are signed up to including usernames. This has unnerved me slightly as I wouldn't want them knowing about worries or problems I had in the past which I have posted about on here (under another username). Would it bother you if this was fact which I hope it isn't? I think people should be entitled to some privacy without worrying about others who have nothing better to do with their time than stalking people!

I’d like to know this too! MN users regularly name change to maintain their anonymity.

MyOpinionIsValid · 23/06/2019 16:41

No they can't. That information would have to be published. Put your email into google and see what it brings up. I get absolutely no returns and this has been my email for 20 years or more

GloGirl · 23/06/2019 16:44

I've reported your thread to ask mnhq.

The answer is no for MN but some websites link your email address to comments you make or some sign up websites. This is getting less common but googling someone's email used to be interesting information gathering!

LilyMumsnet · 23/06/2019 16:46

Hi OP

We certainly wouldn't give that information out, no - your details are private.

TheInebriati · 23/06/2019 16:50

For that to be true, Mumsnet would have to hand over all that data to a third party, and that would be a breach of GDPR (used to be called data protection.)

So your friend is talking rubbish. Try not to feel alarmed if they tell you any more scare stories. They are either daft enough to believe this themselves, or they are trying to make you anxious.

Jolly good! Thank you!

BustedDreams · 23/06/2019 17:37

Wipes sweat 😓 of brow. Phew!!! Thank heavens.

KinderEgg23 · 23/06/2019 17:44

Well that's a relief, I thought it sounded like a load of tosh!
