Green and blacks chocolate

Has something happened? Used to love the stuff. Thought treat myself today and it just tasted of plastic. Noticed palm oil was ingredients list. Has this always been the case? Please throw your dark chocolate recommendations at me. Mostly eat Aldi's own dark chocolate.

I love Divine 70% or 85% (when not on a diet Sad ). Really smooth and creamy! They usually have it at Waitrose or Oxfam shops. Lidl are good too!

Hotterthanahotthing · 13/06/2019 20:42

Not all has palm oil but it is increasing.I don't get much anymore either.Which is good because I am dieting.

ihatethecold · 13/06/2019 20:44

Co op dark chocolate is nice as is Morrison’s own brand.
Love Aldi’s though.

Cruddles · 13/06/2019 20:47

Montezuma's dark chocolate. The one with the purple trim on the label, amazing stuff

cochineal7 · 13/06/2019 20:49

I also like Divine.

DontCallMeShitley · 13/06/2019 20:53

Green & Blacks tastes like cardboard, I first tried it as I was given a gift pack and it was OK, so bought some. Big mistake, I discovered it wasn't the same as the gift pack and on checking I discovered that some had palm oil. However it was so foul I binned it anyway.

Racheyg · 13/06/2019 20:54

Aldi 85% here. I'm pretty sure no palm oil and it's low carb as well

Orangeballon · 13/06/2019 20:55

Green and Blacks was made by an independent company but was taken over by Cadbury’s, I think?

babysharkah · 13/06/2019 20:57

Co op chocolate is amazing, no palm oil.

DontCallMeShitley · 13/06/2019 20:58

I started buying Waitrose brand (I tend to only buy milk chocolate) and it was nice, and then it changed. No more of that one.

Not keen on Divine, it doesn't have the depth of chocolateness I like.

I have settled on Lidl but only in desperation as it is very sweet and I am not mad about it.

I rarely buy chocolate any more. I don't know what else has happened apart from palm oil and less actual chocolate but something has changed and it isn't good.

I have some Tonys Chocoloney waiting to be opened but am not in a rush as I don't have much hope any more.

DianaT1969 · 13/06/2019 21:03

Yes, Green & Blacks used to be good. It was brought by Kraft, who ruined Cadbury's.
I would be sad, but I need to lose weight anyway. Just a shame the next generations are unlikely to 'get' chocolate, because all they've known is plasticy palm oil shite. Go Kraft!
I'm sure there will be lectures in marketing in 50 years, on how Kraft got it so wrong and lessons to be learned đŸ˜…
I like Lindt excellence for dark. Reduced to £1.50 in Tesco instead of £2 at the moment.

WrongKindOfFace · 13/06/2019 21:05

Aldi or Lidl. I also quite like some of the Lindt ones.

Tony’s Chocolony is good, but I don’t know if they sell the dark one in the U.K. It’s Dutch and only recently sold in the U.K.

MEgirl · 13/06/2019 21:39

Lindt or Tesco/Sainsbury own brand dark chocolate.

Moominfan · 13/06/2019 22:34

Thanks for all the suggestions. Aldi and lidl seem popular choices.

Green and blacks was bought out by Mondalez who also own Cadbury, hence the palm oil.
As other posters have said, Lidl and Aldi are both good for chocolate. I'm not sure about Lidl, but I know Aldi's own doesn't contain palm oil.

Leonidas is lovely too, but expensive.

Tillygetsit · 13/06/2019 23:02

I love Lidl dark chocolate. As I'm on a no sugar kick I perv over it each time I go!

LadyRannaldini · 14/06/2019 11:50

In May 2005, Cadbury Schweppes (latterly Cadbury plc) bought Green & Black's for an undisclosed sum, estimated to be around £20m.

This might explain any changes. I love their hot chocolate but I wish I could get Clipper other than in sachets.

CitadelsofScience · 14/06/2019 11:57

I found out last week G&Bs was now owned by Cadbury.

Personally I hate dark chocolate but my dd says Aldi's 70/85% stuff, I think that's the right percentages, is really lovely.

RottnestFerry · 14/06/2019 11:59

I thought it was just me. I recently got given a selection pack as a thank you gift.

It all tasted like soap.

MustardScreams · 14/06/2019 12:03

Tony’s Chocoloney is The Best. Hands down.

Bigfanofcheese · 14/06/2019 13:43

Where can I get some of this Tony Chocoloney's? Never heard if it but it sounds good!

DontCallMeShitley · 14/06/2019 17:15

I got it in Sainsburys. I Googled first though.

3timeslucky · 14/06/2019 17:26

Vivani is excellent. Love their 85%.

Divine and Montezuma's pass the test too.

Willies' Cacao makes a lovely special treat.

StateofIndependance · 14/06/2019 17:30

I don't like Divine at all. Montezuma is good. Sainsbury's have also started selling Godiva.

Pinkmouse6 · 14/06/2019 17:46

Yeah, it’s owned by cadburys and since they were bought out by Americans all of their chocolate is shite.

Divine is great and montezumas.
