To not want to wash my dishes using

Someone else's socks?

A Facebook friend that I know through an online craft group has started making 'scrubbers' for washing dishes using her odd socks. She is selling them for charity - and wants people to donate their odd and holey socks so she can make more...

Envy (not envy)

AIBU to be a bit grossed out by this? I know they will be clean.

Nobody else thinks this is weird?

OP posts:
Morgan12 · 09/06/2019 22:19

It's ridiculous.

Charley34 · 09/06/2019 22:19

Erm nope just weird and I don't think hygienic

OddHoleySocks · 09/06/2019 22:20

Glad it's not just me. Someone has asked to buy 5...

Yabu, however I would be too! They've been washed, possibly boiled or with sanitiser, so should be fine but I still don't like the idea of it!

AphidEater · 09/06/2019 22:39

This is another one of those things that I’m just not remotely bothered about.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 09/06/2019 22:39

What a horrible idea!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/06/2019 22:45

My mum kept all our old terry nappies and used them as dishcloths for pretty much all of my childhood. She didn’t buy any new dishcloths until I was in my teens.

At the time, it seemed perfectly normal ( and they had been boil-washed) but by today’s standards, it is gross. Worse than socks, I think!

OddHoleySocks · 09/06/2019 22:47

Really aphideater?

I can't help but think that I don't know who's feet they have been on, and if they had veruccas or athletes foot or a fungal nail infection...

OP posts:
AphidEater · 09/06/2019 22:48

But presumably they’ve been boil washed? And will then be used in hot soapy water?

I’m probably too relaxed about this kind of thing tbh Grin

TheAverageJuror · 09/06/2019 22:50

Do ypu really know what touched the sponges we biy in shop? I think sanitised socks might be better 😂

OddHoleySocks · 09/06/2019 22:51

But Terry nappies were put on over a liner, and your mum knows what bottoms they've been on!

I'm definitely more OK with that than with a stranger socks on my dishes.

HUZZAH212 · 09/06/2019 22:51

Derailing a bit but are they cotton, nylon, or wool? I recall knitted bikinis never really took off (unsurprisingly) 😁

Chocolate35 · 09/06/2019 22:54

Yuk! This is gross. Nope, I wouldn’t. It probably isn’t that bad in terms of germs once it’s been washed but I’m not washing with something that has been on someone’s sweaty feet. But I HATE feet so I find the whole thing disgusting.

OddHoleySocks · 09/06/2019 22:56

Cotton I think.

nettie434 · 09/06/2019 22:56

But isn't the energy used washing the odd socks at high temperature going to cancel out the environmental savings of reusing socks? I know that hot water and washing up liquid are very effective at killing bacteria but even so, it seems a bit yuk. Also, there are so many resuable washable cloths today so why use old socks? Might be prepared to buy a sock duster but not one for washing up.

MerryDeath · 09/06/2019 23:00

but do you know the stats about kitchen sponges and bacteria? and climate etc etc. I don't mind too much what i wash with as everything is rinsed well. the people who leave washing up to dry covered in soap and dirty water are the real heathens!

gnushoes · 09/06/2019 23:00

Oh FGS. It might seem odd but it's perfectly hygienic. Cat bowls once through the dishwasher are also perfectly hygienic. Nobody needs clean towels or multiple showers daily. There are some right loons on this site - all passing on unscientific views on hygiene to their poor kids.

DonkeyHohtay · 09/06/2019 23:10

What a great idea! Reusing things rather than chucking them out. Every house has a pile of odd socks and if they can be repurposed rather than going to landfill I'm all for it.

Can't be doing with the "ewww, germs, how DISGUSTING" brigade who think using dozens of bottles of bleach and things like anti-bac wipes is preferable to washed, clean, cotton.

Aquamarine1029 · 09/06/2019 23:13

I use wash cloths but I'll pass on someone else's old socks.

Thanks! I try my best :)

(fwiw I have no issue with car food bowls in the dishwasher. In fact I do that myself)

OddHoleySocks · 09/06/2019 23:15

Cat food. Typo.

OP posts:
DameSquashalot · 09/06/2019 23:18

I neither use dozens of bottles of bleach nor anti septic wipes, but I would fancy the idea.i know it's fine, but it's just the thought of it.

DameSquashalot · 09/06/2019 23:19

wouldn't fancy the idea

Jemima232 · 09/06/2019 23:22

Mine hasn't.
