This just came on my TV.

WTF? I don't even know what to say.

OP posts:
mabelmylove · 07/06/2019 18:52

I agree. I miss the good old days when all we had was Egyptian hymns carved into graves.

iklboo · 07/06/2019 18:55

Ooh I miss a good madrigal.

It's OK OP - this happens with every generation. I'm turning into my mum - 'this is just noise. What are they on about? What IS she wearing?' Grin

userabcname · 07/06/2019 18:55

I like that song!

hazell42 · 07/06/2019 18:55

Music has been dying since the invention of, well, music.
Every generation thinks there's is 'proper' music and what comes after is just din.
Th only thing it is a sign of, is that you are getting old

Woofbloodywoof · 07/06/2019 19:00

mabelmylove 😂
Oh OP we’re not meant to like it. We are on a parenting site.
Ach, it’s April Lavigne with added angst. Less annoying than Sk8rboi, although that admittedly had some discernible melody unlike Ms Eilish’s offering here.

Woofbloodywoof · 07/06/2019 19:00

*AVril Lavigne I meant.
Oh God.
I am old.

MummyStruggles · 07/06/2019 19:02

Hazell42 I am afraid you're right and this does mean I'm getting old Confused

stucknoue · 07/06/2019 19:05

There's lot of great new music but other stuff just is noise (dd2 has developed a taste for rap) but we do have shared music tastes. Dd1 and I go to classical concerts.

avocadoincident · 07/06/2019 19:09

Bbc 6 music filters out all the crap for me...new and old

CharityConundrum · 07/06/2019 19:09

What I consider good music doesn't just appear on my TV - it has to be found! Having said that, this was also true when I was 'the youth' so perhaps I'm just out of step permanently!

CrazyOldBagLady · 07/06/2019 19:15

The video posted above is certainly not the worst I've heard. I do agree though that there is loads of dross released. What do people listen to to hear decent new music?

EL2019 · 07/06/2019 19:16

I’ve been watching repeats of Top of the Pops from 1987 on BBC4. You forget how much utter dross there was back in the day!

Whatisthisfuckery · 07/06/2019 19:17

I think current pop music is crap. Insipid as fuck and it all sounds the same. The stuff my DS likes leaves me scratching my head and my younger downstairs neighbours basically play the Smooth FM playlist for 20 years time. I’m pretty sure popular music was more exciting and diverse when I was a teenager but that might just be because I’m getting old. There’s plenty of lesser known good stuff emerging though and my CD collection is still expanding apace.

StoorieHoose · 07/06/2019 19:24

I'd rather listen to Billie Eilish than fecking Little Mix

ClashCityRocker · 07/06/2019 19:27

I dont know, the chart stuff isn't to my taste but I didn't listen to it when I was of that age either particularly. I think there's far greater access to decent music than ever before to be honest, what with YouTube, and all the streaming stuff.

GottaGetUp · 07/06/2019 19:30

There’s always been shite music! And there will always be good music.

What do you like? I’m sure we could find you some current music that passes muster.

FineWordsForAPorcupine · 07/06/2019 19:35

Most pop music is, and has always been, dross, with the occasional stand out, amazing track. But the passage of time filters out the bad stuff and leaves behind the greats, leading to people thinking music "was better in my day".

Also, when people are young they tend to be more interested in music and make more of an effort to find and engage with stuff they like. As they get older, they often "fix" the music they like and stop listening to new stuff. I'm afraid hearing one top 40 track and deciding that "kids today don't know what proper music is" just a sign of age and not bothering much any more :)

Absofuckinlutely · 07/06/2019 19:38

Charts-wise I feel like we've been in a bad music era the last 5 years-ish. Everything seems to sound the same, or is a remix of an older song. Not since around the time of Uptown Funk have I turned on the radio and heard anything new that's really good 🤷‍♀️

RuffleCrow · 07/06/2019 19:41

I started a thread about Billie Eilish and literally every reply was from mums saying how much they love her. I don't love that song, or even like it but her album is rather good in places.

Chippychipsforme · 07/06/2019 19:44

Well at least she's wearing clothes.

And, on that note, I accept that I have turned into my mum.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 07/06/2019 19:47

Yep but its been dead since Green Sleeves.
If not before

My grandparents didmt like my parents music, my parents dont like my music, i don't like my neices and nephews music.

And so it goes on and on

wetpants · 07/06/2019 19:57

Out of current artists I really like Sam Fender, Nothing but the thieves and Miley Cyrus’ new stuff is FAB. And I’m old enough to be their mum.

But sadly my 11 year old DS is into Marshmellow, Dua Lipa, Calvin Harris and other muzak shite.

The80sweregreat · 07/06/2019 20:07

My son (21) likes Billie but he also likes really old music too! He has an odd taste and we often listen to Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles then he'll throw in a a few Kendrick Lemar or the likes of Billie. It's a real mix.
Music is so diverse.

SevilleorBust · 07/06/2019 20:52

My 13 year old daughter introduced me to this song (and Billie Eilish). I like it! I'm far too old to be shocked by the song or video, and actually, I'd rather my daughter be the bad guy (not that I would promote this, or tell her) than some simpering girl who willingly takes abuse from any boy (or anyone), just because she is a woman.
