How long should you wait to hear after a job interview?

I had an interview for a new job almost 3 weeks ago. It seemed to go well! They said they would contact me soon to let me know either way if I got the position or not but so far I haven't had any feedback Sad

I don't think it's looking good!

But anyway, AIBU to send an email just to ask they've filled the position? Or just assume it's probably a no and stop torturing myself?

After three weeks there's no harm in contacting them for an update.

However, after that amount of time it's highly likely you've been unsuccessful. Or, you're not their first choice and they're leaving you hanging on while they contact the other applicant/s first.

I waited 6 weeks to find out I got a job. The lady from the HR dept was on holiday so the paperwork couldn’t be approved. I assumed I hadn’t got it until they called me

No harm in sending an email or a follow up phone call at this stage.

Some companies just don’t bother. I had an interview at a Thames-based water company just over a year ago. I still haven’t heard back from them.

Absolutely call them. Even if you have got it or they're still waiting, have a think about if you want to work somewhere where they don't get around to/can't be arsed to keep people up to date for three weeks...
