I’ve read a good few threads on this point and they’ve provided me with many an hour’s quiet entertainment! But they’re all now quite old, and I’m interested to know if trends/tastes have changed. So, is anyone willing to share your most loved/hated home décor trends or items? And are there any items – useful or useless, beautiful or ugly – you've always wanted and never had; no matter how kooky they may be?

I’ll stick my head over the parapet and start …

Likes

Inglenook fireplaces, wood burners, old parquet flooring, New England colours, natural, textured surfaces (wood, granite, exposed brick), old monk’s benches/chapel chairs, oversized lanterns, hammocks, cocoon chairs, bookshelves, masses of books, blend of traditional and modern styles, chandeliers, silvers and greys (gulp), hot tubs (OK so shoot me!)

Dislikes

Glass doors (including those bifolding things), murals, decals, notices and signs, brass pineapples, glitter (on anything), magnolia, Venetian or vertical blinds, glossy kitchens or furniture, ‘pops of colour’ (and the phrase, too), Swiss cheese plant print on anything, the ongoing fad for blush pink, especially when paired with green. (Yes, I’m looking at you Ideal Home).

Most wanted items: Longcase clock (but I want a Mora one; battery powered as the old mechanisms are too unreliable) and a laundry chute!

I hate kitchens that look like something out of star trek. Like a glossy modern kitchen has taken acid.

AnnieMay100 · 03/06/2019 22:22

Like
Light airy decor creams/whites/greys
Cushions rugs and curtains matching wall colour
Wood/laminate/varnished flooring
Large mirrors
Mirrored furniture
Family photos everywhere

Dislike
Carpet
Fabric sofas
Magnolia/Stone/bare brick walls
Doors and frames that haven’t been glossed
Plants cluttering up random spaces
The modern ‘posh’ bathroom suites with walk in showers and hovering loos and sinks

Halimeda · 03/06/2019 22:23

Dislikes: Anything that looks interior designed. Nests of tables. Corner sofas. Magnolia. Houses with no visible books. Living rooms designed around a giant tv. Anything matchy-matchy.

Likes: Simple, untidy places that look as if they’ve evolved naturally. Good reading lamps. Kitchens designed to cook in. Enough bookshelves. Plants.

RaininSummer · 03/06/2019 22:23

Love grey so long as it's brightened by massive bursts of colour through the art or rugs which I also like. Love dramatic ceiling light fittings which are a design feature and also huge mirrors. Love sumptuous curtains with beautiful damask. Adore wild productive, colourful gardens full of toads and bees. Love kitchens with big farmhouse style tables and loads of character.

Dislike small modern rooms, bland dull colours, patterned carpets or curtains. Antiseptic gardens with no life or joy. Houses with no interesting stuff aka clutter. Ridiculous words on the wall. Sickly canvases of wedding day etc.

Marchinupandownagain · 03/06/2019 22:25

My house. It's perfect.

fancynancyclancy · 03/06/2019 22:25

Oh how can I forgot how much I dislike when people plonk an ugly, modern front door on a period property & when people have lions or eagles either side of their entrance. Fair enough if you live in a county manor but a terrace in Thornton Heath?!

ShitArmBadTattoo · 03/06/2019 22:35

I VERY dislike these fuckers!!! Got the proper heebie jeebies Googling images of dolls head planters ick ick ick

Dislike:
Carpet (we have it on stairs and in bedrooms because of noise but I hate it)
Live Laugh Love, Bathe, Eat, Defecate etc signs/ornaments
Imagine I'll get some hate for this but I don't like lots of family photos all over the place and especially dislike photos printed on canvas hung on the wall
Anaglypta wallpaper (my in laws hung it on their freshly plastered guest bedroom walls, whyyyyyyyy dear lord whyyyyyy?)
En suites
New builds, especially when they have sod all storage and nowhere to keep your hoover and ironing board

“Live, Laugh, Love”
Any type of wall sticker

Clankboing · 03/06/2019 22:37

I hate quotes such as Live Laugh Love / We didn't realise we were making memories. We just knew we were having fun / Love makes a house a home, etc. I know somebody who has about 10 of these different quotes displayed in a diamond shape on a large wall. It makes me feel a bit sick like I have sensory processing disorder / information overload. Also labels 'Breathe', 'Bathe' etc - as if we need instructing to do this. Will we forget otherwise?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 03/06/2019 22:47

@ShitArmBadTattoo - all my whats? Those fugly-looking objects are seriously horrible!

DD2s bedroom is grey she’s 13 and adores wolves so grey is her wifey colour she couldn’t care less about trends.

Kahlua4me · 03/06/2019 22:55

I dislike any thing that is too matchy matchy. Pictures that have been chosen simply to match the decor, too many cushions, too much grey and laminate flooring in sitting room.

I like comfy, cosy houses that reflect the personality of the owners, personal momentos dotted about, real plants and a warm and welcoming feeling when you enter. I also like curtains and carpets.

Itsjeremycorbynsfault · 03/06/2019 23:00

Dislike = grey/silver crushed velvet. It is fucking horrendous

Brown. Any shade. Material or carpet
Ditto burgundy.

Poetryinaction · 03/06/2019 23:15

I dislike loft rooms! It's storage. They make me feeled ripped off and claustraphobic.

britnyc1 · 03/06/2019 23:23

What is wrong with en-suites? I love having the privacy from my kids. Also while fake grass may seem to be a FU to the planet it is actually considered an environmentally friendly option in anywhere with a dry climate as it doesn't require watering. I live in CA and they actively encourage you to have fake grass instead of real.

I like a home that is designed, furnished and accessorised according to what one likes as opposed to what one thinks is 'on trend'. There is nothing wrong with grey, open plan or bifolds in themselves, but there is plenty wrong IMO with planning that because it's 'in'. My home is an eclectic mix of my life, it will never be page 78 of the Next catalogue.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 03/06/2019 23:41

isn't it interesting how one person has a visceral hate to what the next person absolutely loves? The human animal is indeed odd!

I always find that I question my own taste when reading threads such as this. Perhaps my house really is fugly and people are too polite to say? Oh well, it is what it is.

Like:

Lots of white gloss wood trim and dark wood floors
Clutter free
Interesting art on the walls
Space
Mix of fabric/wood/glass textures
Hotel like bathroom
White bedding and towels
Cushions with lots of textures and color

Dislike:

Leather furniture
Shiny/Glossy kitchens
Fake wood floors
Wallpaper (most styles)
Clutter.

GibbonLover · 03/06/2019 23:43

ohhelp Those canvases are dreadful aren't they? And why do they never have any shoes or socks on? Also, cake smash photos.

Having said that, my own likes are certainly not to everyone's taste. I like minimal, uncluttered rooms, plain rather than patterned, bold colours and straight lines.

Dislikes include words on the wall, 'mummy's prosecco time' trinkets, most ornaments (esp. Edwardian ladies, those 'Eternal Circle of Love' things you get from Argos and Lilliput Lane), sticks in straight glass vases, those odd round ball things that you put in bowls and carpets.

But you know what? It would be a bloody boring world if all our houses looked the same.

Time40 · 03/06/2019 23:55

Mine is easy.

Like: Everything antique or vintage

Dislike: Almost everything made after 1979

Duck90 · 04/06/2019 00:20

Some things I dislike now, I used to think were great such as corner couches.

Can’t see myself ever liking fake garden flowers - like those hanging orbs that are in full “flower” all year round. I usually see them outside b&b’s, but not exclusive to...

Poppy43 · 04/06/2019 01:13

Dislike

Black and red kitchens
Teal and brown colour schemes
Everything matching
Canvasses
Glittery or themed loo seats
Spotlight overkill all through the house
Feature walls which have dainty patterns
Shiny glittery bathrooms
Silver appliances like washing machines
Budda heads everywhere or stags heads
Baby's bedrooms that look clinical
Huge knomes in garden
The trend for mint green fencing doors etc
Fake leather sofas
Pointless rugs too small for the room
Hate windowsills cluttered
Random centrepiece vases with colour - coordinated false flowers
Mirrored frames on walls
Anything unicorn
Huge 1990s style photo/portraits
Wall mounted electric fires
Fake leather kitchen chairs

Likes
Anything French or English country style
Fabrics Inc carpets and sofas
Lots of character/owners style
Lived in look
Cleanliness
Nice smells
Dogs/cats present
Open fires
Nice fire surrounds
Kitchens where it is evident they are used to the full advantage so books, utensils, herbs visable
Solid wood kitchen tables
Large rugs
Nice dark wood flooring
Anything italian style in kitchen
Flowers
Books
