And if so please tell me how the blasting hell you get it to move forward?!

Have been given one as a hire car and it’s been parked facing upwards on a hill and it has this stupid automatic handbrake where you press a button while your foot is on the footbrake - so how do I get it to stay still until I have enough gas to move forwards?!

The hire one I had automatically turned the handbrake off when you set off iirc.

Use the clutch Confused

My golf has a hold button which is for situations like that, Not sure if yours has

MeganChips · 03/06/2019 17:08

I have driven a VW with a similar handbrake and I didn’t actually have to use the button to disengage.

As soon as it was in gear and you applied the accelerator the handbrake automatically disengaged.

Have you tried that? It’s really simple if it’s the same.

What they all said. I recently hired a Golf and when I first parked on a hill it felt like the handbrake was never going to disengage but getting the clutch balance and the revs right meant that it did...eventually.

I have one

Is there a button with an A on it below the handbrake button?

If so press it so it goes red

Put your foot on the brake and you will get a green parking light on your dash

You can then do your normal clutch thingy

MaryMuir · 03/06/2019 17:37

Thank you everyone! CaptainPovey that worked perfectly though Christ knows what car manufacturers have against a nice mechanical handbrake anyway

@MaryMuir

Glad to be of help!! Grin Grin

When we first got it, we had to trawl through the manual to find it; the delivery guy did not explain it at all and I had parked it on a downward slope facing forward

I was petrified I would crash it into the wall!!

MaryMuir · 03/06/2019 17:50

I was the same!

Honestly, you feel so bright until you have to drive a new model of car for the first time...
