Elton John is Alive and Well

I know this will get deleted cause it's a taat but that awful thread annoyed me so much.
For clarity, Terrence Higgins was the first person in U.K. to die of AIDS, that was in 1982. Freddie Mercury died in November 1991 almost 10 years later.
Thankfully research has made this devestating epidemic far less of a threat than it was for all the amazing people who succumbed to it in the 80s and 90s.
Not one of them "deserved" it.

I agree.

And although I've heard of the Terrence Higgins Trust, I had no idea it was so named because he was the first person to die from AIDS, so thank you for educating me.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 03/06/2019 16:32

Oh goodness, WTF have I missed?

Pgqio · 03/06/2019 16:33

There's actually footage of Terrence collapsing in Heaven nightclub. It's utterly heartbreaking.

Oh god I had to run to Wikipedia when I saw that. Then I just assumed there had been a film made in which a gay man who happened to be called Elton John died of AIDS. I'm still not clear exactly what the thread was supposed to be about.

ghostyslovesheets · 03/06/2019 16:35

I agree OP - no one deserves to die of AIDS

It is still a killer today - although treatment is more effective - in developing countries not so much.

Charities such as THT and other smaller organisations are still working away supporting those living with HIV and AIDS and continuing with the education programs - they still need support.

My friend has worker for a local charity for 30 years - while no longer attending a funeral a week there is still need for support.

IvanaPee · 03/06/2019 16:36

Huh?

DramaAlpaca · 03/06/2019 16:37

Well said, OP. That other thread was awful.

crazyasafox · 03/06/2019 16:37

YANBU. No-one deserved to die of AIDS. And IMO it was the OP who was thinking it, and was covering it up by pretending it's their 'friends' who were thinking it.

Pgqio · 03/06/2019 16:38

Thanks ghosty. A good friend of mine runs a nutrition clinic for HIV positive patients. So many people still live with the threat.

OP posts:
Pgqio · 03/06/2019 16:38

That's what I thought crazy.

OP posts:
ichifanny · 03/06/2019 16:39

Yes just disgusting even starting a discussion about someone deserving that illness . horrible goady and homophobic designed to bring all the bigots out

Amibeingnaive · 03/06/2019 16:55

By that argument, people who die in traffic collisions deserve it, because they didn't HAVE to get into that car.

Pgqio · 03/06/2019 17:00

I remember people made the distinction between people who were dying of AIDS because of blood transfusions and the gay community. Transfusion recipients were innocent victims but everyone else....sheesh.

kenandbarbie · 03/06/2019 17:07

What was this other thread? Did it get deleted? Sounds awful!

Pgqio · 03/06/2019 17:14

This will get deleted anyway so a brief synopsis is op made rambling post about going to see Rocketman with friends. In her version of Rocketman Elton dies of AIDS.
She then said friends she'd gone to cinema with said Elton had deserved to die for being a big ole promiscuous gay. Op was shocked! Is this how peeps think!?
MN pointed out she had entirely wrong person and thread. She then claimed sleep deprivation had got her mixed up with a Freddie Mercury documentary on channel 5 last night.
Total load of goady, homophobic shite.

OP posts:
Pgqio · 03/06/2019 17:15

Film not thread.

OP posts:
kenandbarbie · 03/06/2019 17:16

Oh dear! Glad it got deleted! How are you finding you new found viral fame?

iklboo · 03/06/2019 17:16

Wholeheartedly agree OP. I was having these arguments with ex and his family years ago.

Pgqio · 03/06/2019 17:22

Lol my fame seems to have died down thankfully. It was a pleasant distraction from the other crap going on in my life 😊

flamingoflamangos · 03/06/2019 17:29

Thanks for posting this OP. I saw the thread and it reminded me just how prevalent homophobia still is.

A cherished family friend died in the 90’s when I was about 10. He was a friend of my parents. He wasn’t openly gay but confided in close friends/family. He died painfully from AIDs and begged those who knew him to tell people he contracted it through a blood transfusion, such was his shame. It breaks my heart to this day.

Pgqio · 03/06/2019 17:35

That sucks flamingo. I'll never forget sitting in the GUM clinic waiting room for my friend's test results. Thankfully he was negative. We were only 20 years old, it was terrifying.

OP posts:
AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 03/06/2019 17:38

It’s an awful disease. A straight female I knew from school was infected by her boyfriend who she didn’t know was infected and who was removing the condom during intercourse.

She was in her early 30’s when she passed.

That thread was sick. Very clearly a nasty bastard getting their kicks out of riling people.
