To be scared of having a mammogram

violeticecream · 28/05/2019 21:16

I have received an appointment for a mammogram in a couple of weeks time. I am nearly 51
I know I am being daft but I am really worried about it being painful as i have big boobs and imagine it's worse if they are bigger rather than smaller
Is it that bad or is it bearable?

OP posts:

It's uncomfortable but over quickly. Take some ibuprofen before you go.

Welliesandpyjamas · 28/05/2019 21:19

It is a little bit uncomfortable when they get squeezed but it is quick and, when I went, the lady was very good and considerate. You can do it!

lljkk · 28/05/2019 21:19

What hurt me was machine scraping Small boobs off my bony chest. My ribs hurt, not my boobs. Plenty of extra padding would have been better (I imagine).

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 28/05/2019 21:21

I would describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful (medium sized boobage)

Do it. It's only a couple of minutes of your day but is possibly lifesaving

Redshoeblueshoe · 28/05/2019 21:22

It's uncomfortable rather than painful, but I have my own padding, and big boobs.
They are incredibly efficient. I was only there for under 10 minutes

ShinyRuby · 28/05/2019 21:22

I had my first one last year, it was only mildly uncomfortable & the staff were really nice & reassuring. It literally took minutes & results were back in just over a week.

recklessgran · 28/05/2019 21:22

In my honest opinion the tit slammer is far less worrisome than the fanny clamp. OP in all seriousness it really isn't as bad as you think and if you tell them you feel nervous that will help. Not as uncomfortable for the bigger breasted I've heard. Try not to worry - it only takes a minute then it's over for another 3 years.

dudsville · 28/05/2019 21:23

I would like to great people's experience of this. I haven't been as I'm terrified!

Greyhound22 · 28/05/2019 21:24

My mum was talking to the woman that did them (sorry can't think of a title) and she said it was actually more painful for women with smaller boobs as like someone said above they get scraped and pulled around more.

TapasForTwo · 28/05/2019 21:24

I think having smaller boobs makes it more difficult to get them onto the plate. It sounds I am built like you ljkk

The mammogram itself doesn't hurt. It is just a few seconds of discomfort. They are carried out in a very professional, matter of fact way. Almost like putting supermarket items through the till.

Manipulate woman's boobs in between the plates, scan, other side, then next please. It's all done with the utmost privacy as well.

AllBellyandBoobs · 28/05/2019 21:25

I had my first one a few weeks back and told the lady doing it that it was the first time in my life I was genuinely happy to have big boobs. Honestly, I think small boobs would be much worse in this instance. It isn't very dignified but it wasn't painful for me

Aquamarine1029 · 28/05/2019 21:25

There is absolutely nothing to be scared of. There will be a bit of pressure and then it's quickly over. Be logical. If it were so excruciating no one would ever have one done, and that wouldn't work at all.

TapasForTwo · 28/05/2019 21:26

dudsville there is really nothing to be terrified of. Honestly.

Shelby2010 · 28/05/2019 21:27

It’s a bit uncomfortable but not painful. Big boobs are probably less uncomfortable than small ones because you can just plop them onto the screening ledge. It was all over very quickly & the nurse was lovely.

You’ll wonder what you were worried for.

Answeringonlyyesorno · 28/05/2019 21:28

It's really not painful, just uncomfortable as they squish them quite well, but I'd rather have a mammogram any day of the week over a smear. The nurses were so kind and gentle and make adjustments so you're stood in the right spot, boob clamped correctly etc.
Although, it's the only time I feel droopy boobs are an advantage as I imagine clamping down on a pert boobie more of a challenge Smile

Purpleartichoke · 28/05/2019 21:29

I’m terrified. I have K cups and my understanding ding is it will take multiple slides be side.

fizzysci · 28/05/2019 21:30

How long does it take? Do you have to stand up for long?

I have had a letter but haven't been.

LovelyJubblee · 28/05/2019 21:31

I would have a hundred mammograms over one smear

PickAChew · 28/05/2019 21:32

I had my first one, the other week. It was my neck that hurt, as I contorted to get a clear picture. Apparently it's less painful with bigger boobs - though I found that mine stuck to the platten, as we had a rare hot day!

GnomeDePlume · 28/05/2019 21:32

Had mine done this afternoon. No problem except that a combination of fat and gravity made it difficult to keep them in place for the side on shot.

I am normally a very private person but found the experience fine.

Our screening unit is in fact a large trailer fully kitted out. Reminded me of many a mobile home holiday! And I got to spend 10 minutes reading a magazine.

BeckyAnnLeeman · 28/05/2019 21:32

I'm amply titted and a total wimp and would happily have a mammogram tomorrow no bother. Your boobs just get squished in the machine for 30 seconds a time and that's it. Uncomfortable but nothing more.

mrswarthog · 28/05/2019 21:35

I'm having one tomorrow- my 3rd in 4 years. Its uncomfortable, takes 5 minutes and I'm large of nork so its squishy but manageable.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 28/05/2019 21:35

I'm relatively small-breasted (38C) and had first last year. It did feel like she had to be a bit firmer to get each one on to the plate than might have been the case with bigger ones. You only have to stand up for a matter of a minute or two AFAIR and it was all done very quickly indeed.

Thatnameistaken · 28/05/2019 21:35

I've got a hefty chest and mine was fine, I just flopped them on one at a time and it was done in a jiffy, nothing to worry about.

ilovepixie · 28/05/2019 21:36

My boobs are big. 44DD! I had one last year and it was painless and over very quickly.
