AIBU to wonder about this Mumsnet mystery

I clocked onto it few weeks ago.

In a morning someone starts a threat.
For example "Both my ears fell off, AIBU not to go to A&E? My DH is freaking out though." and throughout the day number of other posts "should I go to doctor?" appear. If none appears in a morning, no one else seems to need to visit a doctor that day...

Same with neigbours, police, food, friends who move to or from countryside/London (Wink) environment, partners, families, pets, speckles of dust....

Is it some kind of herd mentality "Oh! Someone is talking about that issue, I have it too" or is it more of a "Oh! It got lots of comments, I shall make up similar post to have fun today" situation?

🤔

Can’t say I’ve noticed this but I expect if it is a phenomenon it’s because people see a similar situation to something they have experienced and it leads them to share their story.

LindsayDenton · 25/05/2019 21:43

I’ve noticed this today with a couple of threads about changing career.

Maybe, as you say when someone sees something that is related to their issue they want to post for advice on their own situation. For all it’s faults, MN does tend to have decent advice for people in a quandary.

Unburnished · 25/05/2019 21:48

Cant say Ive noticed this but what I have noticed an increase in is people posting a dilemma or question and then just buggering off, never to return. It makes me think they're journos looking for stories.

TheAverageJuror · 26/05/2019 12:42

I suspect the "hit and runs" are mainly just for shit and giggles.
I also suspect that 40% of posts are made up. At least lately.

I've noticed this. I put it down to topic association.

MRex · 26/05/2019 14:38

Maybe there's a specific virus affecting ears doing the rounds; or a person with a very sharp sword, an ear fetish and a quiet demeanour.

WorraLiberty · 26/05/2019 14:40

Yes I've always noticed this OP.

At the moment, the current trend seems to be threads about OPs who are upset at being mistaken for being much younger.

Unburnished · 26/05/2019 15:11

Grin worra Yes and they then seem most put out to be told that it might just be something else that’s causing people to stare.

DramaAlpaca · 26/05/2019 15:13

Yes, I've noticed this too, not just recently.

WhiteRedRose · 26/05/2019 15:22

Can I start one about this just to bug you? 😁

Checking my ears for virus signs

I am glad others see it too! Thought I was going crazy at one point. Open a thread in a morning. Come back in the evening and get confused by wth is going on.

WorraLiberty · 26/05/2019 15:47

I've been posting for about 8 years and I've always noticed this. Quite a few other posters have noticed it too.

I think that's where a lot of the embellishment comes from, because they want to make their thread different to all the others.

neverendingflorist · 26/05/2019 15:50

I thought this post might have been about why Boswell walked up the post office steps.

TheAverageJuror · 26/05/2019 16:07

@neverendingflorist Don't start! Grin

TheAverageJuror I just can’t get over it. I need to know!!

HennyPennyHorror · 27/05/2019 04:04

There's been a heck of a lot of Hen night threads lately...

RebootYourEngine · 27/05/2019 04:11

There are a couple of 'stealing or not' threads too.

SheilaBruce · 27/05/2019 04:50

Boswell!!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 27/05/2019 05:46

Yes, it's true that multiple threads on the same theme often appear together. Prostitution/lap dancing/phone line sex worker is one such theme! Dental phobia, rehoming pets, child modelling, waxing of pubes - at times I've seen Active Coversations with a disproportionate number of threads on those themes.

Time was you couldn't move on Mumsnet for threads about bumsex.

Skittlesandbeer · 27/05/2019 06:04

I’ve noticed the plethora of hens do threads, but wouldn’t you expect this in Northern hemisphere springtime?

Will look out for other ‘trends’ more carefully now...

TheAverageJuror · 27/05/2019 08:47

Yeah, it's hen do season.

This made me laugh! Blush
