To sell item to 2nd buyer not 1st

I put an item for sale on 2 selling sites yesterday.
1st buyer messaged asked if it was still for sale and would I accept X, I said yes sfs and would accept X, & gave my number to text me ( at 11am yesterday).
I didn’t hear back, later that day buyer 2 messaged from another site & offered X which I accepted & confirmed sale.
Just had text from buyer 1 ( 9am today so 22 hours later) asking to collect, I explained it was no longer for sale, she said doesn’t understand=we I agreed sale yesterday, I explained that due to her not getting back to me I presumed she had changed her mind. Was I in wrong selling to 2nd buyer when 1st did not reply?

How long was it between the offers?

prettyLittlefool · 25/05/2019 10:25

It's yours. Sell it to who you like. You don't owe anything to anyone. Too slow you miss out. Simple as that.

poohfant · 25/05/2019 10:27

4 hours, but 1st buyer only got back to me after 22 hours

I think I would have presumed she was buying it and not sold to the second person later, on the same day I'd agreed to sell to someone else.

But I don't think she should have left it quite so long to get back to you either. I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you. It's best just to be polite and business like and your reply was fine after a day waiting.

LemonSqueezy0 · 25/05/2019 10:30

Some sites have specific rules, but by and large you have every right to sell it at the best price /most convenient circumstances. Just say sorry, when I didn't get a reply to my message I assumed you weren't interested anymore. Thanks.
Not a massive deal to be honest, so they shouldn't make it into one.

hidinginthenightgarden · 25/05/2019 11:02

No I am with you. I have been let down too many times. I agree with another if someone goes quiet.
Otherwise you could be stuck with it.

Disfordarkchocolate · 25/05/2019 11:02

4 hours isn't long to wait, they could have just been at work or in bed.

herculepoirot2 · 25/05/2019 11:09

You agreed to sell it to her. Then you sold it to someone else. It wasn’t like you had tried to contact her. YABU.

freshstartnewme · 25/05/2019 11:16

It doesn't matter that it took her 22 hours to get back to you, you sold it to someone else after only 4 hours. That's pretty bad.

Dvg · 25/05/2019 11:26

I would have sold it to 2nd buyer as well, i've had plenty of time wasters as well.

Dvg · 25/05/2019 11:27

PLUS plenty of people ask if something is available and then dont get back to you about actually buying it.

She never agreed to buy it she just asked if it was Sfs.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 25/05/2019 11:31

I would have maybe messaged buyer 1 and said you had another buyer interested and were they still coming - given them a nudge to get their arse in gear before going to buyer 2, but it is yours to sell to who you want.

TheWeatherGirl1 · 25/05/2019 12:06

What you did was absolutely fine, I get so fed up chasing people who have expressed an interest and then don't respond.

Yura · 25/05/2019 12:09

Given the numbed of people who say they are interested and never come to collect stuff, i have a 2 hours rule. no response in 2 hours and it goes to next in line

Yura · 25/05/2019 12:12

@freshstartnewme 4 hours is tons of time!. if you want an item, you need to communicate with the seller!

lyralalala · 25/05/2019 12:16

If you replied to buyer1 straight away then I think 4 hours of them not replying is plenty of time to assume they're not interested.

If there was a delay between their message and your reply then not so much.

MelonSlice · 25/05/2019 12:41

First at the door with the right cash, gets the item
