To think of buying some Thomas Cook Shares

They are 10p now.
I can buy 500 for £50 quid. If they recover there's a fortune to be had. It's just like a relatively small bet at this level

Didn't Next make a similar recovery many years ago.

Depends if you can afford to lose £50 I guess?

WhoKnewBeefStew · 20/05/2019 15:14

If you can afford to lose £50 then go for it. To make any money you’d have to keep hold if them for a while anyway

WickedGoodDoge · 20/05/2019 15:44

Their shares had a similar collapse in 2011 then swiftly recovered. Depends on whether or not you think the same will happen this time. They are just under 10p right now, but the year high has only been £1.27ish and not all that much more over the past 10 years so you’d eventually make a bit but not a fortune if they do recover. (Yes, I know past performance not an indication blah blah blah, but making the point that they are unlikely to end up at say, £25 per share)

@Gth1234

Out of interest, what platform do you use to purchase shares? I always wanted to get into this but it seems very confusing and complicated.

Witchofzog · 20/05/2019 17:39

Watching with interest as I was hoping to do this too

MagicKingdom · 20/05/2019 17:44

Never done anything like this before. Is it fairly straightforward?

Gth1234 · 20/05/2019 17:45

@blondequeenie

I have an account with share.com. You can "play" trade on most platforms.

I really think you need to spend £500 minimum to justify the in/out costs, (£15 or so minimum commission to buy and sell, so you need to make at least £30-40 profit just to break even - something like that) but if you bought £50 worth of these, and they went up to £500 you would show a decent profit.

I use Hargreaves Lansdown. There’s an app.

Teddybear45 · 20/05/2019 17:49

The best bet for growth is HSBC. They guarantee dividends and is currently valued low. Post Brexit it will be the Bank stock that will shoot up as it’s primary markets are all outside of Europe.

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/05/2019 17:57

Hmm. Interesting. The only time I've previously had this thought was with Marconi, and they went bust before I could lose the £30/40 I was thinking of spending on shares, but I have an account with www.x-o.co.uk/ who charge £6 for share buying, so it might be worth a punt on that sort of amount.

WickedGoodDoge · 20/05/2019 18:03

I’m also with Hargreaves. Relatively expensive compared to other platforms but incredibly easy to use.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/05/2019 10:12

They've not been as low as 10p have they Confused

They're at £11.96 - that's not 11p is it???

LaurieFairyCake · 21/05/2019 10:23

Scratch that it's 11p Blush

Still can't buy them - set up a Hargreaves landsdown account and they're not listed in the shares to buy Confused

What am I doing wrong?

languagebridget · 21/05/2019 10:23

yes it is 11.96p.

WickedGoodDoge · 21/05/2019 10:32

Laurie go into you account. Click on “deal now” then do a stock search for Thomas Cook. Then click on the green arrow button on the right when Thomas Cook comes up on the search bar. That takes you to the dealing page for the stock.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/05/2019 10:39

I've not been sent a login yet or had an email - this is the add share page for me

I clicked forward instead of buying and it's taken me to setting up a login. And I've got to the final page and it says it can take a day to set up.

So hopefully I can login tomorrow to the screen you've described and 'deal'

Thanks 🙏

WickedGoodDoge · 21/05/2019 10:46

Hmmm, not sure then. I’m assuming that Thomas Cook does not come up when you click on the select a share?

WickedGoodDoge · 21/05/2019 10:46

Sorry, cross post!

LaurieFairyCake · 21/05/2019 10:49

They set it up quick and I now own shares!!!Grin
