To worry that the antibiotics caused DS to be sick?

Looking for experiences really.

Last Wednesday DS (5) came home from school with a temperature, l presumed it was a virus. He complained of feeling sick on and off through Thursday and Friday but thought nothing of it. He was started on some antibiotics for a separate issue - he had one dose on Thursday evening and one dose Friday morning. Friday evening he vomited 😣 I just thought it was one of those things and gave him his antibiotic dose that evening. An hour later he vomited it back up. He was fine overnight but woke up Saturday morning vomiting again. I then gave him his antibiotic dose due to wanting to continue the course - it came back up 10 minutes later. He vomited a further 5 times on Saturday, once on Sunday. He was very lethargic and sleepy both Saturday and Sunday, no temperature. Started getting better on Monday. Fine now but need to start the antibiotics again but I'm so worried him being ill was an antibiotic reaction.

AIBU to worry it was the antibiotics that made him sick? He's had this type twice before.

What is the name of the ABx?
What does the patient information leaflet say?

I think the two are unrelated. Just a vomiting bug at the same time as antibiotics - he felt sick already.

You’ll need more antibiotics I think as the ones he’s thrown up won’t have done their stuff.

I definitely get nausea with some antibiotics. Ask.the GP. I may be good to get a different one

I've still got almost a bottle full from the course he was prescribed. I asked the OOH doctor about starting them again but he was very vague. Was more interested in checking that DS was ok as he was very lethargic.

My DD is allergic to penicillin there are a couple of antibiotics she can take if necessary. One of them makes her sick so we have to make sure she can keep some of it down
. I think it was amoxicillin?

Contact your GP because if one antibiotic doesn’t suit him there will be others.

Some antibiotics make me sick but they don't count it as an allergy serious enough not to prescribe them in future. You'll need to check but I think if it's kept down for half an hour then they don't need to repeat the dose. Obviously it may all be different in children anyway, so do seek proper medical advice.

Clarithromycin. He's had it as a toddler for ear infections and was fine. He was just so ill after only two doses, can antibiotics make someone that ill?

If I were to start him again how soon would it make him ill if it were them?

Oh that stuff can be nasty.
I would ask the GP if there is an alternative.

Luxembourgmama · 17/05/2019 19:08

My toddler had the same antibiotics are rough on their little tummies

Vomiting is a side effect.
Are you giving it with milk or food?

flumpybear · 17/05/2019 19:11

Just call the non emergency phone number for advice - it's bad to not have the correct doses of antibiotics but they'll tel you how to manage this through vomiting as I'm sure there's guidelines

ooopsupsideyourhead · 17/05/2019 19:27

If he’s had it before without being sick, surely they should be ok? I suppose they could have changed the ingredients, but very unlikely.

My 23 month old is just coming to the end of a week long vomiting/diarrhoea bug and for a few days in the middle was really lethargic - including one point where I was really struggling to rouse them and was debating calling for help. They were properly spaced out, eyes barely open etc. Then Bing came on and they perked right up.
