To think this isn't sockpuppeting?

Something just occurred to me so apologies if this has been done many times.

I NC'd earlier to start a new thread, then wanted to respond to someone who had addressed me as my old username on a thread I'd commented on yesterday.

I'm now wondering how I respond. If I respond as my new name, there's a risk of being accused of sockpuppeting, but it isn't intentional!

Can I change my name back and fore? Isn't that just a pain in the arse?

If you don’t mind being connected to the old name, just explain what you’re doing. If you do mind, change back to your old name to reply.

No, sock puppeting is where you start talking to yourself pretending to be different people.

You can just type your old name into the box above where you type your post, that way no one can connect your new thread with your old name.

@IAmTheChosenOne
Just googled sockpuppeting. It's changing your username for the purposes of deception. Ooh-er, I've changed mine fairly frequently but not to deceive and, if someone has addressed me by a former name, I've changed it back to answer them.

I bet there's a name for people like me. Grin

Or, if you only want to use that new name for the one thread that you started you can go into your settings and change your default name back to the old one (or any other name you have had in the past)

Just be careful posting on your new thread so you don't out yourself!

You can change your name back and fore, your name changes are logged with MN and stay 'attached' to you.

Sock puppeting is when you use several different names on the same thread to reply to yourself as if you were a different poster, usually done by posters who are being disagreed with and suddenly a few 'new' posters chime in with support for the OP.

Name changing to start a particular thread using said name change for the entirety of that thread and then going onto a different thread that you have commented on in which you have used your 'original' username and replying in the original username is not sock puppeting.

Several posters name change when starting a specific thread so it is not attached to their posting history in their usual name.

Thank you all!

I had no idea you could do this! That will be so much easier!

Sockpuppetry is starting a thread, and then deliberately changing name so you can pretend to be someone else when you are replying to posts on your own thread.
