To consider Rio Brazil as a family summer holiday?

Has anyone been over the summer with kids? Is it safe?

Went at Easter rather than in the summer. Followed usual common sense and were perfectly safe. Didn’t feel threatened at all. Did a long drive along the coast through areas where there have been problems for tourists. Stuck to the main roads and had a great trip. Hope to go back.
