So spent the day with DN yesterday who I helped raise when I was a teen with DM so very close!! She is 13 almost 14 and she was showing me the girls she follows on instagram from MTV programmes such as Teen Mom/Young & Pregnant etc! Now when I was younger watching these shows put me OF getting pregnant but now MTV seems to be glorifying teen pregnancy Teen Mom UK has 3 girls on the show who have 2 children under the age of 21! Young and pregnant has a girl on currently pregnant with her second!

My DN said she would love a baby yesterday, I told her it is really hard having a baby especially when your young without a job! Her answer... Well it cant be that hard can it all the girls I follow from teen mom have more than 1 baby! I didn't know what to say.

I am quite shocked that a show meant to help prevent teen pregnancy is now making young girls think having not 1 but 2 baby's isn't 'that hard' because they continue to film young irresponsible girls on benefits living in council flats paid for by the government 🤦🏻‍♀️

How depressing, maybe show her some shows based in uk about young mums. It's far from glamorous

concernedaunty1 · 13/05/2019 11:48

@Moominfan Teen Mom Uk is about 4 UK teen mums! 2 of them are currently pregnant with their 2nd (she showed me their instagram 🙄) and one had another when her first child was only just 1!

Its actually hilarious because 2 of the girls on the first and second season who both WORK and only have 1 child got cut from the show!!

The girls on teen mom are paid for everything they do now, the make money from stories they sell, from businesses they have been able to start up because of the show. I can tell her what it's actually like to have a baby as a teenager and it is not fun, it's stressful, people judge you, it's embarrassing living of benefits, you are isolated from all your friends. The list goes on.

DoomOnTheBroom · 13/05/2019 11:59

I don't think the UK version does glorify teen pregnancy or show them that they'll get "a council flat paid for by the government" (Hmm) given that the show features several of them getting totally shat on by their boyfriends/friends, making poor decisions, and not having anything close to the teenage life they should be having. As for those flats, only a few of them are (or were) in social housing, the rest were living at home and one was living in a caravan outside her parents house.

It's up to the adults in your niece's life to emphasise that teen pregnancy is not a good idea or a realistic lifestyle choice.

concernedaunty1 · 13/05/2019 12:05

@DoomOnTheBroom its more about the fact they continue to 'hire/pay' girls that get pregnant again and again with 1 in particular, gives a sense of well it cant be that bad if she's willing to keep getting pregnant than use contraception!

Obviously to a young girl it looks all play and dress up when thats not the reality! She defo needs to stop following the insta accounts, all holidays and nights out because like PP said they will be getting paid now for ads etc! 😌

@concernedaunty1 those two girls did not get cut from the show. They quit due to realising the show was no good for their families.

Teen mom uk is about girls 16 and over who have gotten pregnant. Not ideal but completely legal!

Unlike teen mom us which is kids 14/15 getting pregnant. Who are now adults going on to have more kids they aren't teens anymore.

Girls at that age think having a baby is a great idea. There was loads that thought the same when I was in school before teen mom existed. Most didn't go and get pregnant until well into their 20s.

AnalUnicorn · 13/05/2019 12:13

When I was younger MTV used to be about music, not Teen Mom type bollocks.

concernedaunty1 · 13/05/2019 12:13

@Moonbea if that was the case why was Mia not featured but she was came on the show to meet up with another girl? X

Didn't realise there was a teen mum uk, I remember watching a documentary about a young girl called kizzi or something like that, was pretty grim

Moonbea · 14/05/2019 07:41

@concernedaunty1 because manly refuses to give permission for their daughter to be filmed.

He's seen sense and realised how badly it was affecting their lives with their daughter and put a stop to it.

We all know how heavily edited it is and how they make situations out to be a lot worse than it really is because of the the editing.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 14/05/2019 08:05

I've seen that show and I don't know why anyone would want their lives. Men treating them like crap, poky little flats, tears about being able to hold down jobs because of no sorry from the children's father's around childcare etc. It's also not for 13 year olds so maybe someone should be regulating what she watches?
