To go to the GP or would I be wasting their time?

I've had a bad chesty cough for just under a month now and it's driving me crazy!
Nothing I do seems to work.
I do have a history of asthma but I haven't had medication in years for it.
At one point with a cough/bad chest do you go to the GP if at all?

If not and you have any tips for an awful chest infection I'd be grateful as I can't sleep, my chest hurts and literally driving me bonkers.

Any cough lasting more than 3 weeks warrants an X-ray (national guidelines). So no YANBU

CripsSandwiches · 10/05/2019 22:21

YANBU could well be the asthma and require treatment. Even without the asthma risk a persistent cough should be a doctors visit.

I agree. You need to see someone.
Hope you feel better soon.

Bambamber · 10/05/2019 22:23

Definitely go, it could well be a flare up of your asthma. Even if not, it's still worth checking

If it's bad and not improving go and see them. (If it was improving but annoying it would be different.) You say it hurts.....that isn't normal. You also sound like you rarely go to the doctors.....you are allowed when you aren't well. No one will think you are wasting their time. I hope it gets resolved soon.

My GP doesn't buy into the "any cough over 3 weeks needs an X-Ray" guidance, so be prepared to be fobbed off if your GP is like mine.
I'd been coughing for 6 weeks at this point, coughing so hard I was giving myself nosebleeds.....

I'm guessing that X-rays and other referrals must cost the GP money, as they rarely do them....

'..you are allowed when you aren't well. No one will think you are wasting their time'

My doctor is a little bit you aren't dead get out of my surgery ish.
Unfortunately because of where we live and failure to recruit another GP there aren't many other options!

I’m asthmatic. If I have a cough that lasts more than a week or looks like it’s turning into a chest infection and my asthma action plan hasn’t helped, it at least warrants a phone call.

The fact that you have a history of asthma suggests that you need to re-start medication.
