This Wednesday or next Wednesday

I think Wednesday next week (15th) is NEXT Wednesday. He thinks it's THIS Wednesday.
It's very confusing. What do you say?
Surely a day in next week is referred to as "next..."

I would say "this coming Wednesday"

wontletmelogin · 10/05/2019 19:21

It's this Wednesday. I'm firmly in your Dh camp though nobody ever agrees with me.

highlandcoo · 10/05/2019 19:24

Is your DH Scottish? I think we often do this .. but now that I live in England I do tend to clarify to avoid confusion.

superking · 10/05/2019 19:24

Oooh tricky. I tend to only say "this" if the day in question is within a few days. So today (Friday) I would talk about "this Sunday", "this Monday". I probably wouldn't say "this Wednesday" though, it's a bit far away and so I would say "next Wednesday".

ineedanewjobplease · 10/05/2019 19:27

I would say 'this' as in 'this coming Wednesday'.

Or I would say, 'not this Wednesday but next' meaning the following week to clarify what I mean by 'next'.

RainbowFox · 10/05/2019 19:28

Because it's Friday, I would say it's next Wednesday as it's next week. If it was Monday though I would say this Wednesday as it would be this week.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 10/05/2019 19:29

DH and I argue more ferociously about this than anything els. If it is within the next seven days or the closest Wednesday in the future I say this Wednesday or this coming Wednesday, , if today is Monday, tomorrow is Tuesday, the day after tomorrow is this Wednesday the one after is next Wednesday. If today is Monday DH thinks the day in two days time is next Wednesday, hence;

'I thought you were doing x today, no that's next Wednesday!'

or
'DH why have you made plans for next Wednesday we have commitments we spoke about them?'
' oh I thought that was tomorrow'
'If it was tomorrow I would bloody say tomorrow, I said next Wednesday so I mean next Wednesday, not this one!!!' Gaaaahhhhhh

NoSauce · 10/05/2019 19:29

This. Next would be the Wednesday after to me.

SneakyGremlins · 10/05/2019 19:30

Next Wednesday cause it's next week.

This Wednesday would only be spoken about in the past on a Friday, eg "I had an appointment this Wednesday at the GP"

MaximusHeadroom · 10/05/2019 19:31

For me

This Wednesday is the first one after today.
Next Wednesday is the one after.

As in Wednesday next week

Soubriquet · 10/05/2019 19:31

This Wednesday

As in the Wednesday coming up

Next weds would be the weds after

RaptorWhiskers · 10/05/2019 19:31

Because it's Friday, I would say it's next Wednesday as it's next week. If it was Monday though I would say this Wednesday as it would be this week
This is how I’d see it too. If it’s this week it’s this Wednesday. If it’s next week it’s next Wednesday.

NoParticularPattern · 10/05/2019 19:38

Depends what I’m talking about. If I was talking about something in the future and said “this Wednesday” then I would assume everyone knew that I meant the nearest Wednesday to today. I would get somewhat confused and have to ask someone to clarify if they said “next Wednesday” as to me that would be the one after this Wednesday. If I’m talking about the past then “this Wednesday” means the Wednesday just gone. The only time I’d know for sure that “next wednesday” meant the next Wednesday from today would be ON a Wednesday. It’s just a lot easier all round if we all agree to use dates outside of today, tomorrow and the day after 🙈 my mother disagrees and thinks that I’m being unnecessarily difficult 😂

dooraaraa · 10/05/2019 20:30

I'm still confused! Haha.
For me, if I'm talking about Wednesday 2 days ago (in the past), I'd just say "on Wednesday". For the Wednesday coming, I'd say "next Wednesday" as it's next week, the week starts on Monday, so we are still part of this week. If it was Monday today, I'd say "this Wednesday". It's always been really clear to me but I'm not sure anymore!!
