I am currently on a bus. Its 0738am so might be feeling over cranky because its early and I'm tired, and a lad is chomping his way through a chocolate bar behind me. He is constantly rustling the wrapper really loudly and then to my right is a man rolling cigarettes, again, rustling the packet loudly. My ears can't take it! Confused

I so know how you feel. I'd like to live in a world where everyone else wasn't allowed to make this sort of noise, especially eating.

Flutra · 10/05/2019 07:49

Thanks disfordarkchocolate Smile eating in public should be banned, except for restaurants and cafes that have enough chatter or music loud enough to drown out others eating sounds!

Especially drinking Red Bull, honestly the smell is so bad it makes me sick.

RestingBitchFaced · 10/05/2019 07:54

Who the hell eats chocolate at this time in the morning anyway 😫

Dafspunk · 10/05/2019 07:54

Noise cancelling headphones - Bose.

Sexnotgender · 10/05/2019 07:55

I struggle with noise too, I’m sure I have misophonia.

TheClitterati · 10/05/2019 07:56

Dd (11) had a friend over after school yesterday and the noise. It was like a herd of buffalo were running around above me. I really tried not to let it bother me but that noise drives me insane.

Also dd2 loves cereal but hates the sound of chewing it inside her head. So she chews it with her mouth open to reduce her internal noise - and that noise gives me huge distress.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/05/2019 07:57

Drives me spare.

The trains are like feeding time at the Zoo sometimes, except the Zoo probably stinks less.

DannyWallace · 10/05/2019 07:58

I'm actually sure I hear background noise louder than whatever I'm meant to be listening to. Like if I can hear my neighbours TV, even a tiny bit, I won't be able to concentrate on my own TV.

It's the same with the noises you've mentioned. I just can't focus on anything else and I get so wound up! It's horrible!!

Drogosnextwife · 10/05/2019 08:01

I can't stand when people let their children make a lot of noise, and try to have a conversation with you over the top of them, but don't raise their own voice so you can hear them, or tell their annoying children that screaming at the top of their voice and shouting over adults IS NOT OK!

Skittlesandbeer · 10/05/2019 08:10

Heard a radio documentary last week about how our hearing changes from middle-age.

Apparently, long before we notice any decrease in hearing ability, something happens to the higher frequencies ‘receivers’ in our ears. Higher-pitched sounds, especially ‘clanging’ sounds like cutlery or crockery banging together, starts to sound really annoying and distracting in a way it never did before. I suppose wrappers rustling and kid’s voices might also be in that category.

I got cross that the answer is apparently age-related (I’m 47 ffs), but have to admit I fall into this category. I’ve had 2 house reconstructions on my boundaries this last year, and it’s definitely some sounds not others that do my head in. The ones that shred my nerves aren’t necessarily the loudest. I’m doing an experiment on whether the ones that get to me are ‘higher’ like cutting tile and metal. I think it’s a firm ‘yes’ so far.

allnewredfairy · 10/05/2019 08:14

I tune into background noises and this drives me batty. I hear water in pipes during training sessions, thurifer chains rattling during mass, rustling clothes of people sat behind me in a theatre, that sort of thing. I really have difficulty paying attention because of this. I try to reframe it as a superpower!

FlatPackPat · 10/05/2019 08:15

Urgh yes to people drinking energy drinks in the morning- the smell Envy dunno how people can stomach fizzy drinks in the morning, especially after just brushing your teeth I assume?

Agree with PP though, I have some bose 35 noise cancelling headphones and they're amazing! Can't hear a thing.

MidsomerBurgers · 10/05/2019 08:16

@Sexnotgender

Me too. It's got worse as I have got older as well.

lubeybooby · 10/05/2019 08:17

it's a genetic type thing OP... misophonia

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misophonia

MidsomerBurgers · 10/05/2019 08:17

@Skittlesandbeer

Interesting. I'm the same age as you.

Loopyluloo · 10/05/2019 08:20

Yes I didn't realise it was an actual 'thing' as sexnotgender mentions - misophonia and can be really debilitating. I can't stand the sound of some people eating (or that vile tooth sucking sound) but others eating don't bother me so much, odd 🤔

JustDanceAddict · 10/05/2019 08:20

I’m sure I have misiphonia too. My tolerance for noise has decreased with age. Hate eating noises especially.

Kochicoo · 10/05/2019 08:54

When I was commuting and using trains a lot, I always carried wax earplugs with me because the noise was just too stressful otherwise. I recommend it!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/05/2019 09:26

Saying you have misophonia normalises this sort of behaviour.

Basically you are saying it bothers me because of the misophonia, if I didn’t have it I would be ok with noisy eating.

It’s not you/us, it’s the noisy eaters who have no manners who are the problem.

AnnieMay100 · 10/05/2019 09:31

I agree I feel the same way some people are just rude and inconsiderate when it comes to noises stick some ear plugs or headphones in next time and block them out

havingtochangeusernameagain · 10/05/2019 09:33

Noise pollution really is a thing and mainly because people are massively inconsiderate. Sometimes you can't avoid making a noise, but I'd say 9 times out of 10 people really can. For example, yesterday on a train (in a quiet carriage) someone started watching something with the sound turned up! And you don't need to mow your lawn constantly either.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 10/05/2019 09:34

Anyone who eats anything with their mouth open/noisily has no manners. None.

The DC often have friends over and whilst I am generally quite happy to feed them all, they have one set of friends whose table manners make me want to leave the room. YANBU at all OP.

TheLastNigel · 10/05/2019 16:39

The sound of motorbike engines makes me absolutely rage for no reason at all. Especially the super loud ones driven by spotty 17 year olds that think they look good. Fuck off.

Offallycheap · 10/05/2019 16:42

Kill. Kill them all.
